Why do we rarely see kids from Maryville/Alcoa come to/get offered by UT?

Both of the Blount Co. schools recruit players from all over the State. backin the 1950s and 60s,, Dobyns Bennett high school would recruit players from all over East Tennessee and their Fathers would all of a sudden have a nice job in Kingsport. It happened for football, basketball, and baseball. They won a lot of games and were always ranked high in the State.

Juan Jennings was recruited to play at Blackman highschool. Originally from Franklin county. Your right it happens all the time

Brandon Warren and Rae Sykes were two of the most sought after prospects to come out of Alcoa that I recall. Both eventually made their way to UT but never lived up to the hype. IIRC, UK mislead Randall Cobb with promises of being a QB. Fulmer should have done a much better job with that recruitment. Luckily, that miss never came back to haunt UT because Cobb’s teams at KY did not beat the Vols.
Warren was awesome but couldn’t act right. He was a freshman All American at FSU before he transferred home. That was a weird time in offensive football. Arkansas with the Wild Hog was utilizing the Wildcat package and that is what Cobb did two of the first three years at UK. He was used everywhere but had a lot of rushing scores. When Joker came, he moved him to WR full time and he made a lot of $$ because of it.

The same year Fulmer missed on Patrick Willis he also whiffed on Michael Oher and that was the beginning of the end of Fulmer, the inability to land the best in the state of Tennessee is never good.

Not the same year. Willis was recruited under Cutcliffe at OM.

I went to, and played for, Maryville in the early 2000’s. We were blessed enough to win a lot of ballgames. We didn’t win on talent though. My class, for example, had one D1 athlete that didn’t pan out. We won because we knew what to do and how to do it. In high school and lower levels, being at the right place means a whole lot.

Tee Higgins wasn't playing for Butch bottom line

The Collins Brothers going to GA from Jefferson County always bothered me along with Leroy Thompson going to PSU but local Reggie Cobb soon made me not mind

I cant stand Phil Fulmer. But theres nothing he could have done to keep that kid from going to Ole Miss. The parents were alums and the HC was some guy named Hugh Freeze.
Freeze coached him at Briarcrest. He was always gonna go to Ole Miss once Freeze went there. Oher & Willis weren't the only Memphis kids they pulled. They got Cassius Vaughn who was a 4star CB out of Memphis East that played multiple years in the NFL.

There are better players elsewhere.

Both City schools besides their normal supporting populations had a lot of folks with school age kids move into those areas to take advantage of both the educational and sports superior opportunities. For years Alcoa for sure and Maryville I think accepted tuition students when they had room. Many would take advantage of the fact that the parents were driving close to the schools for their normal work or other daily dealings and both Heritage and William Blount are not very convenient. Heritage is on the way to Townsend, and WB to Lenoir City between 411 and 321. So many were having to travel away from town if you would.

We helped pay for our grands to go to convenient Alcoa 6 miles away from the Rockford area near the airport to avoid Heritage 12 miles away and very inconvenient. Oddly South Doyle in Knox County is only 5 miles away for reference. Any shopping would take us right to Alcoa anyway. So many of the county students often referred to as RECRUITED to Alcoa actually entered in K or 1st grade as ours did for the same reasons. Previous year tuition students had priority over any newbies trying to enter in later years and people were on waiting lists for years. My kids moved away to Knox before HS. Not sure with all the apartment explosions in Alcoa and new house starts the last few years where that all stands. Major expansion on the Alcoa campus near middle school as we speak and they just built the new HS on same site not too many years ago. We are about out of school aged kids in E. TN. YEAH.......
