To answer why doesn't Tennessee have good instate talent, let's ask a few questions.

1. What are the high school's off season programs? Florida, Georgia, Texas and Alabama have spring practice. North Carolina doesn't have spring practice, but they allow coaches to conduct drills with up to 10 players per day in shorts, shirts and helmets.

2. Are there 7 on 7 leagues in Tennessee? These develop passers and receivers.

3. In Florida many coaches are teachers also. If you want to be on the team you should take weight lifting classes especially set up for football players. The exception is if you are participating in another sport. Does Tennessee have something like this?

4. What are the facilities like in Tennessee? The high school athletic training facilities in Texas can make you go "wow". How are they in Tennessee?

5. If Caucasians are such terrible athletes how do you explain all those swimmers, LaCrosse players, baseball players, wrestlers, and soccer players? How about a combination of athletic ability, coaching and attitude?

Its not necessarily better coaches, it's that other states have better football programs overall. There are a few exceptions in TN but the examples with Byrnes or a team like Southlake Carroll are valid points. These teams have a program that starts in middle school and continues year round until they graduate. I know in TX and probably some of these other states, the football coaches are in charge of hiring not only their own assistants but also the middle school coaches. The larger cities in the south also have comparatively better public schools than TN cities do.

It has very little to do with the better systems. If we had the talent here the systems would be created. We do not. We have some but not like other states. Memphis is are only hot bed and it happens to be a shared city with other states. I am not saying we cannot improve our system and get better results but we would still not be GA, TX, FL, CA, LA, or AL.

There was an article in Sports Illustrated a few weeks ago about Texas high school football and the fact that they had 7 on 7 tournaments year round. The article was saying that those tournaments helped to develop QB for college. There are about 20 colleges in 2009 with starters from Texas.

There is also the problem of "perception". I know of several coaches that coach here in TN that have also coached in other states and they will tell you that they have guys here that might not be rated high as a recruit, but if that same player was in FL or GA he would be rated higher just because of the state he was in.

It make me believe that 13th ranking that TN has for D1 players. I would love to know how many guys TN has that get under valued and go to smaller schools and then turn out to be pretty good players that could have helped UT.

Julian Burton from white station dominated the 5a championship. Running back, db, punter. Most valuable player on offense and defense. I am an alum of WS but surely he could contribute to UT somehow if he had an offer.

First off, new to the board as a poster, and just wanted to say I love all your info on the board.

That being said, is it just me noticing it or does Tennessee as a state produce a lot more basketball prospects than football? If so, why does this disparity exist?

It's numerous factors: money, support from the school systems and conferences, football is a year round sport. Weight program, camps, 2-a-days, etc developmental programs for middle school. Tennessee just don't have the resources.
