Why doesn't Jarnell Stokes get more criticism?

Rebounding? Maymon is "technically" more efficient than Stokes.

Define "technically", because Stokes average 9.3 RBs in 29.2 mins per game, while Maymon averages 8.4 RBs in 26.1 mins per game. That means both of them average 1 RB slightly over every 3 mins so maybe you are referring to some other technical element of their game.

Stokes' offensive rebounding % (rebounds you grab/ possible offensive rebounds when you're in the game)= 15.9%

Maymon's ORB%= 16.0%

Stokes' DRB%= 20.6%.

Maymon's DRP%= 21.0%

If time on the court were exactly the same, Maymon barely edges him out on both ends.

This really baffles me. Radio broadcasts, message boards, talk shows... I watch him play and he seems so slow and uninterested. In the TAMU game, multiple times players went by him while he didn't move, wasn't looking, etc. He has no ability to provide help side defense, he doesn't jump. I can't remember the last time I saw a hustle play from him.

Comes off the court after the second foul and people put up the high fives for him and he just walks by them. Then they put in Reese/etc and you see _effort_

Why doesn't he receive more criticism?

I would like to see Stokes get some attitude while playing....like Webber in his days at Michigan (without the timeout call)

And some Wayne Chism enthusiasm....

Then the team would feed off of it...that big he should be the leader imho.

He seems more interested in resting on his laurels and buying into the hype than in improving his game.

Whether you're a fan of Stokes or not, there's absolutely no denying he has improved his free throw shooting.

He also appears more fit having dropped a few pounds.

Its obvious he has a very reserved court personality that some folks mistake for lack of interest.

Its hard to deny though that his college game doesn't appear to translate to today's NBA well. I do not see him getting drafted if he declares after this season. If he comes back next year and improves another aspect of his game (preferably a mid-range jumper) to the same degree he improved his free throws, then maybe there is a chance for the 2015 draft.

Without knowing Stokes, its easy to guess that he was physically completely overwhelming as a high schooler such that he never had to work on his game to remain dominate. Maybe he's learning the work ethic required to be elite on the college level? I'd definately advise him to return next season with an improved game, secure his degree, then see how the draft goes. If no luck with the NBA, then make some bank over seas for a few years and return home with his degree in hand ready to join the rest of America.

One thing that contributes to Stokes' perceived attitude is that he isn't a fiery person. People are just created differently, and Jarnell has always been a "quiet" person. I think he does get down when he picks up a few fouls. With the new rules, he doesn't seem as aggressive, but someone made an interesting point in this board about him. Just because Stokes doesn't fall down doesn't mean a foul shouldn't be called when he is on offense. He will get a quick one on defense but has to earn one on offense.

Our fans just need to learn that he is limited. He is a true post player at 6'8". He has problems with length. But I would be pounding it in him that he needs to learn to be a garbage man if he wants to play in the NBA.

Stokes can earn some serious money this Saturday playing against WCS and Randle. Let's see what he does. If I remember correctly he owners WCS last year?

#2 in the SEC in rebounds? Yeah. I'm not worried about his effort.

Because they know more than you.

What is he most efficient at? Scoring? No, both Barton, Richardson and McRae are more efficient. Rebounding? Maymon is "technically" more efficient than Stokes.[/QUOTE

:lolabove::lolabove: DA!!!!

Your completely full of cah cah. Stokes is a much better rebounder, lol. He is most efficient at double doubles! What are most efficient at?

Yea that's been popular opinion since he returned, that was also the thought heading into last year too though...so who knows.

I personally would like to see Jarnell drop about 15 pounds. Similar to what happened with Shaq Goodwin. Shaq losing that weight made him a much better player. Jarnell with the weight is more skilled than Goodwin. If he played above the rim more I think he could be dominate in this league

I don't think he can drop that kind of weight at ~8-9% body fat.

Stokes inst the problem. He isn't quite consistent enough and doesn't play to his strengths this year in an obvious attempt to impress NBA scouts. He has still been productive though. Unfortunately, he is going to force an NBA move from what I've seen.

Mock NBA draft has him going to the Houston Rockets in the 1st round. Of course, that depends on how many high schoolers and European players enter the draft.

Wasn't there a high shoot n 3 pointer just a few years ago named Scotty Hopson projected first round and left school early? That's what I think about projections.

I don't think he was in many projections by his JR year. Hopson wasn't a bust as a bball player, but an NBA bust? Yeah, pretty much.
