Why is offense so bad?

Nico isn’t it right now
This all day. Nico is to fragile and indecisive to play quarterback in the SEC. Merk is a 4star and the Vols have another 4star QB coming in next year. That position needs to be opened for competition when Spring training camp begins. It is also way past time for Heupel to show Hazle the door.

Line is terrible, wideouts are inconsistent, the passing concepts aren't very good for the personnel we have, the play calling is bad

I’m not trying to be a smartass - I’m truly not - but our Oline is very poor. This was a known fact coming into the season and why 10-2 was as good as we could possibly do.
Turns out, we coulda’ gone 11-1…. We’ve overachieved to be honest (thanks to the D). We just don’t have the dudes on OLine. Our center is real good. That’s it.
Help is on the way - but right now it is what it is- and has been since spring. Luckily, we have the chance to put together a more complete game and overcome it (as we have to some degree), and make some playoff noise….

I didn’t think it was that bad tonight. Thought Nico played well. Sampson is obviously a beast. Lewis is going to be a star. Critical drops by the wideouts that could have changed the game that second quarter. We certainly still have some protection issues. But let’s not forget Georgia receiving some very clearly biased calls. Everyone always says that’s sour grapes but it was so clearly biased on the “face mask” and “12th man” penalties it’s laughable. Our own coach agrees. It approached professional wrestling level tonight.

I get it 17 ain’t enough but the offense started strong and were playing with confidence. Got no complimentary play from the defense. Then offense struggled and defense still struggled.

I’ll add that I thought tonight was the best we’ve looked as a team against Georgia since Heupel arrived. Honestly none of the games have been competitive until this one, not even close. I know we still didn’t get it done but at least we gave them a game.

They need to figure out why they’re only able to score points in one half. All season it’s been the first half. Tonight they decided to flip and just not score in the second.

QB: doesn't have good touch on intermediate and deep passes hence why most of our passes are 7 yards or less
OL: Left side is not left side SEC quality and the whole line struggles with motion and stunts
WR: Cant get separation and too many drops
HC: uninspired play calling and goes away from what is working

RB: Are very good, but it is hard to play from behind when you are a running team
TE: Also good, we should get them involved more and continue throwing to them when they are catching balls

To me, it's actually the wideouts and the passing scheme. The OL is fine, they're not great but I actually thought tonight they were good.

Nico isn't a problem right now to me. He was against Arkansas and Florida but since the second half of Alabama he's been very good.

The WR's just do not get open consistently and we don't scheme it up to get them open. I understand the staff keeps it simple to run the no huddle but the lack of true passing concepts is killing us. We don't run any true passing concepts like stick, flood, smash, scissors, the basic stuff. It's literally screen, slant, dig, go route, super occasional post. We don't use the RB's in the passing game. And we constantly have big drops.

The offense isn't as bad as fan perception. Vol fans compare the offense to a really high standard based on previous offensive success under Heupel.

But defensive coordinators have caught on, so we aren't getting behind DBs as much. Also, the playclock runs differently.

We are still running the ball efficiently. Nico is still growing into himself and his potential. I also think we turned the ball over too much the last few weeks at home along with offensive penalties that have hampered the offense. We need to play cleaner. I think we did at times tonight. Just hard to be super effective on the road.

The offense is bad for a couple of reasons.

1. We do not have a good coordinator running the offense.
2. We do not make any adjustments on the offensive side of the ball between halves which is because of #1 above.
3. We do not focus on fundamental discipline which is why we see more receivers consistently dropping passes than we should.
4. The O-Line has some really bad players on it. Heard is a prime example. Dude is one of the worst O-Linemen Tennessee has run out there in recent memory.
5. The offense is one dimensional.
