Why LSU

I think I would rather see us and LSU in the SEC championship and watch us win with Hurd running like a beast for 125+ yards while our D holds Fournette to under 50. That would be satisfying on multiple levels. No bowl for Florida, no playoff for Bama, and us beating LSU in the SECCG. Oh yeah....

I find it funny that so many people are picking LSU to win the SEC, Les had one foot out the door. Have they upgraded at any coaching position and if not they will never out coach Alabama. I may be somewhat biased, but Tennessee has a better chance to win the SEC and honestly believe Shoop is one of the top coordinators in the country!

LSU seriously upgraded at the DC position..they have as much talent as anybody in the country..if They get good QB play from Harris they will win the West..Miles has put coached Saban before and aside from last year LSU had Ala beat both years prior and that was without good QB play. LSU will beat Ala in Death Valley this year and will be TN vs LSU in the SEC Championship game.. atleast I hope lol

It blows my mind that people are doubting Tennessee because of the passing game... Yet are putting LSU at #5 and winning the conference. Retarded to me.

Is that a recipe to beat Alabama? How many yards did Fournette rush for last year against them, they go get a good DC and leave an offense alone that fits perfectly into bamas scheme, and now talking heads feel they will win with the same philosophy. Sounds about right

Ala stacked the box again them last year and Fournette didn't have a chance..If Harris elevates his game then they are as good as anybody..and this Ala team lost a lot of production from last year..yes they reload but they won't be as good as they were last year..This won't be the dominant Ala team Saban typically throws out there..they have question marks all over the place not to mention losing a lot of coach's..Not sure why Saban hired Jeremy Pruitt but we have faired well against his defense's.

Miles has proven he can beat top 5 teams and win championships..to this point Butch hasn't.. hopefully that changes this year..for that matter Ala,GA, A'M and UF are all breaking in new QB's and nobody has a clue what kind of QB production each will have.. predictions by fans and media mean nothing, just fun for everyone to talk about and speculate.

This might honestly be the most talented defense Saban has had. And that's not hyperbole. We return 13 of 19 interceptions; 41 of 52 sacks. I don't make hard and fast predictions before the season, but the potential is there for an absolutely dominating defense.

As far as Pruitt, our best secondaries came with him as DBs coach. With Smart gone, there is no one who knows the system better than Pruitt. It's Saban's defense, so it's not like we're changing schemes.

I'm glad you like Bammer...but it was one game, against the best defense in CFB, who had 1 mission...stop Fournette.

Outside of that, his totals were:
159 yds
228
244
233
158
180
150
91
108
159
212

The bold plus his 31 against Bama were LSU's three losses. He was held below 5 yards per carry in all three. Fournette is awesome, but he's not good enough to get past a team with a stout defense that has no reason to respect the pass. No one is.

I had actually looked this same thing up in a different thread and as you say in all three games Fournette was held under 5ypc they lost. TN had 4 games where Hurd didn't even manage 4ypc yet still won 3 of them. (and should have won the FL game as well)

If LSU is going to win the West they'll need to be more than just Fournette's legs.

LSU has Fournette. If for any reason he goes down with an injury that sidelines him for multiple games, LSU is done. But if he is healthy all year LSU is the team to beat in the west.

Bama gets the nod simply because they have earned it with wins on the field (five in a row vs LSU, never mind all the NC titles), but LSU could ride a healthy Fournette all the way.

I do see your point on the D, Saban is usually going to always have an elite defense. But the last few years the offense has been the difference in a lot of their wins. Kiffin has really bailed out Saban since he has been there. Saban is always going to reload most years but I'm just not sure this offense will be able to bail them out of some of the games they have had to do since Lane has been OC. It's been nothing short of a miracle of what Lane did with Sims and Coker at QB. Similar to what he did for Crompton the one year he was at UT. But he did have Cooper 2 years ago and a beast in Henry last year. I know Ala has some really good WR's and will always have a good or 5. But they lost a lot of production on both sides of the ball on top of all the coaching changes. I learned a long time ago to never bet against Saban but between all of the production they lost, the coaching changes, the off the field distractions with so many arrests and transfers. It all could catch up with Ala and lead to a down year by Saban standards. That's the great thing about college football we never know from year to year but I can't wait!

I'd love to see Les get the W.

But...

The game plan won't change. Harris will have to prove he can win the big game.

If he goes down it would hurt them but their back up could start for just about anybody in the country. LSU will always be stacked at RB. Their issues under Miles is for some reason he cannot develop a QB or get good, consistent QB play year in and out. I don't know why because they can load up at WR and every other position but for some reason QB play is usually an issue. Les could have a couple more NC's if he could ever get elite QB's to go along with everything else he has.

Absolutely right. Bad QB play has hurt Fournette and has kept Les from winning more SEC and NC. There is no reason he shouldn't be able to get elite QB's. One of life's great mysteries. I know Harris was highly recruited and has had a few highly rated QB's but for some reason they haven't panned out. Mettenberger has been probably the best QB Les has had and he was a transfer. Just don't understand it because they still get great WR's somehow.

Other than Chad Kelly all the Qbs are so so at best, of course, Harris was just a sophomore. Once he got the hernia in the first half of the Bama it was mostly done for him. Unless Harris can play D or ST it mostly was a lost cause, LSU actually did pretty damn good on offense other than the 3 game streak.

As far as someone saying LSU's D was not the problem, that person has no idea what they are talking about as far as football. LSU's D was arguably the worst they had in about 17 years, and the ST was worse I have ever seen at LSU period. With that said, they only lost 3 games, and return 90% of the personnel.

I am confused by why someone is confused by the thought, although I now have a slight advantage to Bama due to all the recent injures, I heard another one today.

LSU is going from a 4-3 defence to a 3-4 defense. Most teams struggle for a while with that move until they get the right players for that system. I could be wrong, but I think LSU will as well.

LSU is a good football team, but they are not better than Ala****. They are probably on par with Ole Miss in the west.

I like Ole Miss in the West. They own Bama. Bama's defense is over rated. Good defenses don't give up 500 yards to anybody. Clemson ate that bunch up last year. Bama's defense is not going to be any better than it was last year. Alabama is going to look a lot like LSU this year since they don't have a QB. Ole Miss and Tennessee will be beat bama rather easily this year.

Me? I just want the Vols in Atlanta. If the SECCG is a wickedly contested back & forth football game, OK by me, BUT, I'd like the Vols to WIN. Hear me, Lord.

And all the congregation said amen.
