Why not a UT v. UT Cotton Bowl?

Gotta love Conference Tie-Ins.

I wish they didn't have them.

I wish bowls had to offer, and teams had to accept, and there weren't conference tie-ins.

It's also lame that the #4 SEC team will end up playing the #2, or 3 team from another conference. Then if they lose, it's supposedly an indication that the SEC was overrated that year.

I for one would love to see Tennessee in the Cotton Bowl again, but for purely selfish reasons. Since I'm down in South Texas (I really miss Knoxville at this time of year!), it's simply the easiest bowl for me to get to.

I was able to go to the 2005 Cotton Bowl, and it was fantastic, even though it was a blow-out and I was the only person wearing orange in a sea of Aggie maroon. I went to the game with about 12 Aggie fans. And yes, it got ugly.

Plus, if we play Texas, and if by some miracle we win (with Colt McCoy all gimpy that looks like a distinct possibility), I can have bragging rights on my entire family, which is about half Aggies and half Longhorns. Heh heh...

There is no way the Cotton Bowl with and SEC West tie-in is going to pass an 10-2 Auburn team to pick up an 9-3 UT. That makes no sense.
Where do you get that the Cotton has a tie in to the SEC West? They have the #3 pick from the SEC, but that dosen't have to be a team from the west.

The reality is UT is going to be in the Outback playing a team thats not even ranked.

When the SEC team in the Peach Bowl and the Music City Bowl, is going to play a better team then UT gets to play in the Outback, if the projections hold out.

What the #@$@#$@ is up with that???

A blessing in disguise maybe? Perhaps the Vols will actually WIN a bowl game for a change?

I just want us to win, I still remember not playing in a bowl last year.

So whoever and wherever we play, we need to dominate, so we can enhance recruiting.

The Cotton Bowl prefers a team from the West. They think that a West team fans will travel better, since they play in Dallas.

Actually, you gain more by playing a "big time" program like Texas or Penn State because more people. including potential future recruits will be watching. Since we are not likely to vault into the top ten anyway, I'd rather play a major program than possibly get beat by a Wake Forrest or Maryland.

I know the odds are small.
I know that y'all would prefer a better/warmer bowl.
I know TX would probably get smoked.
HOWEVER, I'd get to go on a road trip back home to Dallas with about 15 of my best Vol-friends.

The first Bowl game that I ever went to was the 1990 Cotton Bowl when I was still in high school. TN beat Arky. I can't imagine a more awesome experience than getting together with a group of my friends and family; 50-50 split between the UT's.

Nevertheless, good luck in whatever bowl game y'all end up in. ===Horn in Knoxville

I'd love to play texas in the Cotton Bowl - as long as the VOLS win.

Beating A&M a few years ago was pretty nice, but beating the 'horns would be much sweeter. It wouldn't be a bad matchup for us, with Texas' issues on pass coverage, and the fact they don't have a strong running game...

I know that they prefer a west team, but they've also taken us twice since they began their SEC tie in in 98. He made it sound like they HAD to take a west team.

Ditto Rockydoc. Texas and Penn State are both "Big Name" football programs. They both have huge fan followings, just like us. Playing and beating them is worth a lot in the eyes of recruits who want to play in big time games. We have a lot to gain by going to the Cotton or the Outback.

If I'm Auburn and I'm ranked 13th in the Nation, and I get stuck playing 32th ranked PSU in the Outback I'm going to be royally P.O. Thats a major shaft.
If that did happen, I'd be glad someone else was getting the shaft in the bowl scenario than UT....I would also like to play Texas in the Cotton Bowl and beat them just simply so we'd have bragging rights over them.....But either way, I'll be ok with it....I'd be ok with playing Penn St. from a recruiting stand point but beating Texas or Va Tech in the Peach Bowl or Cotton Bowl would be good fora rankings stand point and for recruiting to get a big win over a team like them this late in the season....Va Tech is a quiet 10-2 team, that'd be a solid win

MSNBC projections have us going to the Cotton Bowl to face Oklahoma. Either would be a good game, I'd be thrilled for us to play in a New Year's bowl regardless.

I want to go to a bowl game that we could win though......I don't know that we could beat Oklahoma if Adrian Peterson comes back.....Because god knows we have enough trouble trying to stop a mediocre running game, let a lone a decent run game like their's......I do think though that we can beat them

I see it both ways. Better right now to play and beat Va. Tech. However, in the long run, it looks better to play Texas, purely for the sake of saying we beat Texas. In four or five years, nobody is going to care that they had 3 losses entering the game. Just like nobody really cares now that Marlyand was 11-3 the year they beat us in the Peach Bowl. People just remember that Maryland beat us and that is embarassing. Therefore, I would rather beat a down Texas team than a good Va. Tech team.

Amen.

Plus, I'd like to see this "real UT" business settled for a while.

I'd much prefer a chance at long-term bragging rights in a "commodity" bowl than walking into another trap in Atlanta. VT is pretty hot right now.

Va Tech is a very good team and have VERY quietly sneaked into having a 10-2 record.....They're a good team and IMO would be getting screwed if they went to the Peach Bowl

I would love to see this matchup.. i live in San Antonio and i wear my Tenn stuff all the time.. When i wear my hat with the "T" on it everyone always assumes its Texas... it makes me soo mad.. my best friends along with all the rest are all Texas fans and we always joke about who the real UT is.. def. Tenn.. Anyways, I would love to settle that once and for all.. it would be awesome to have bragging rights... they also dont believe the SEC is the best conf.. i know, there idiots... Man i hate burnt orange!!!

Why do you want the BCS to fail? It works more often than not, yet, some people are so bent on seeing it fail that they wish for these situations...

I want the BCS to fail so that a playoff gets looked at more seriously and more quickly.

preach on brother. playing texas would be infinitely better than playing VT because (1) texas is defending National Champs; (2) texas is the other UT; (3) we will beat texas; (4)i hate to say it, but VT would spank us.

Even if Peterson doesn't come back, I'd still dread that matchup. Their other AP is running wild, as well as the other RB who has had a few big games. His name escapes me at the moment.

Agreed. Oklahoma has comeback... Make the Oregon result correct and they are a one-loss team this year. Very good for losing the starting QB and left tackle.

I hear ya, I didn't know they had another good tail back.....Either way we can't stop the run, so I wouldn't wanna play a good team with a good running game

Oklahoma is hot and will beat Nebraska and go to a BCS Bowl. Anyway I wouldn't want to play a Stoops or Beamer coached team in a bowl. It would be a mismatch in coaching of gigantic proportions.:whatever:
