Why Oklahoma REALLY fired Josh Heupel According To longtime OU reporter John Hoover..

Best thing that ever happened to the Tennessee Volunteers!

Thanks, Bob, we’ll keep him.

Funny thing is that they now have a very mediocre coach in Venables. It’ll be really funny when CJH is at the top of the OU wishlist to replace him. I have to believe that CJH will say “no thanks.”

I enjoy Dave Hooker's You Tube segments and found this one particularly interesting..I feel like the Lincoln Riley hiring was a huge slap in CJH's face..I hope y'all enjoy..Here's the link:

Pretty sure Mayfield was sitting out his transfer year in 2014. Riley didn’t “bring him in”.

MY understanding was that the Offense was NOT the "Problem" in 2014...it was the DEFENSE...but, who was the Defensive Coordinator?

Coach Josh Heupel would not be here at Tennessee resurrecting our beloved program from the dead if it wasn't for Bob Stoops' errors in judgement. As @UT Hill Man said, this is all part of God's plan. I thank God for CJH being here. It is very ironic that Stoops went back to what Heupel knew was best (with Lincoln Riley) after he instructed him to do something different that resulted in failure. That illustrates very weak and selfish personality traits in Stoops for firing him instead of allowing him to go back to what he was successful doing at OU. Regardless, we all win having him as a coach. CJH wins coaching at the best school on the face of the earth. Go Vols!

Heupel has had a long journey going from Junior College QB, to leading OK to a NATTY, to getting hired and fired by his almamater, to ultimately the success he is finding at UT.

I BELIEVE this was part of God's plan for Josh.
sure, God is all-knowing. He is cooking up greater things than Tennessee Football while he's at it, though

Yessir. He "walked on" in early '14 was denied immediate playing eligibility by NCAA, and appealed to NC2A but was denied and couldn't play until '15.
What he appealed (and won) was a reversal of the old NCAA rule that governed both scholarship and walk-ons transferring without permission from the previous team losing TWO seasons. His appeal got that rule changed for walk-ons.

Bob wanted a read option offense, but Heupel's DNA was Air Raid. Heupel struggled to produce what Bob want, so Bob fired him and hired Lincoln Riley, who installed the Air Raid.
Not exactly. Josh was not running a pure Air Raid and Bob wanted it. But I don’t know the OU offense had migrated to a mishmash before Josh and during. But Bob brought in the pistol from Nevada and Chris Ault and forced that on Josh. At that time and very early in his career Josh’s offense was a mishmash. To my own personal ears from an opposing coach then now a current NFL coach. On my grave. Obviously he’s now one of the brightest minds in college football. He was equal to your beloved Peyton Manning at the line of scrimmage. The best at the LOS of any QB to ever play at the University of Oklahoma.

Good explanation from the other side of the field.

Pretty much and his brother Mike Stoops in charge of the defense. But the offense was underperforming for our standards. Do I personally think Josh deserved to be fired? I do not. But it was struggling from what was customary but it was also related to average QB play.

Didn’t Mike take the head job at Arizona?
No he was fired at Arizona in 2011 and Bob brought him back to co-DC with Venables. Venables having been DC by himself for several years wasn’t happy. He was also unhappy that Bob fired his secondary coach Willie Martinez who was undeserving of it but Bob was going to make room for his brother. Dabo came calling with a much better salary which OU matched but Brent wanted out.

I think between the rapport he has with White and the general NIL infrastructure here, there is little chance he leaves for OU.

Now his manager might use it to leverage a bigger raise but I don’t think Josh would really entertain it.

He’d be crazy to. Josh was at OU 2 years coached several years but I don’t see some huge loyalty
