Why Oklahoma REALLY fired Josh Heupel According To longtime OU reporter John Hoover..

I think between the rapport he has with White and the general NIL infrastructure here, there is little chance he leaves for OU.

Now his manager might use it to leverage a bigger raise but I don’t think Josh would really entertain it.

He has such a good relationship with DW, that using another job as a way to get a raise isn’t necessary.

The bigger question would be why-considering the full history would be want to leave for OK?

He's been here long enough that he has "his guys" all over the field. Heupel has already turned the ship around quickly so the hardest part of the lifting was done long ago

He is adored by a rabid fan base, he and his family seem to be happy here, and end of the day we can match any salary the Sooners can offer

The man is setting his own path now and that is a powerful powerful motivator. He goes back to OU and he will always be in Stoops shadow in one form or another. Josh is certainly intelligent enough to realize that.

Not saying one day he doesn't leave-I personally doubt it for a number of reasons-but if he does it will not be to OU.

Anticipating a 2026 “15% Leadership Fee” surcharge on the season tickets.

Once he wins us a National Championship I could possibly see him return like Majors did after Pitt 76.

The ONLY reason would be because it’s where he won a Natty as a player.

In this business going “Home” isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be.

Not Happening. Would you return after being fired? Here you can get all the revenge on OU you want since they're now in the SEC, and you can be the best in the super-competitive SEC. TN will only be getting better & recruiting will be getting much better & easier with our success.

Bob Stoops had similar questions/thoughts about himself leaving Oklahoma for at least the first decade he was there. At first, it was Florida (where he had been Spurrier's DC) was going to get him. Then, Ohio State. Then, Notre Dame (he's Catholic). Then, Iowa (his alma mater). On top of that, every year it was "some team from the NFL is going to take him". Bob loves Norman and still lives there. He was never going anywhere, but we never knew for sure.

Bob retired when he was ready. He had always said that he would not die on a football field. His dad was a HS coach who had a heart attack and died on the field at a game. He has coached for fun in the XFL (or whatever it is called this week), done some TV work, owns a tequila brand, and is generally loving life.

I can see JH doing something similar in another 15 years or so after he stacks up some championships at UT. For all of the animosity between Bob and JH (or perceived animosity), they are alike in many ways.

That's kinda the point though-even of he did go back and win a NC-who do you think will find a way to be on the stage? Stoops.

The media would be running with "Stoops found this unknown kid from SD who won a NC as a player and then Bob brought him back as coach for another NC"

The man had been "retired" for the better part of a decade but still holds an immense amount of power at OU.

At least here, Heupel is gonna get the accolades (or the blame) for whatever happens. Sometimes you just can't put a price on being as much in control of your own destiny as possible.

Wouldn’t you be pissed if your girlfriend made you cut your hair, then broke up with you because she didn’t like your new hair cut and then she married a guy with hair exactly like yours before she made you cut it?! I’ll answer that for you, yes you would.

My wife doesn't allow me to have girlfriends.

She's such a buzzkill.

Heupel has had a long journey going from Junior College QB, to leading OK to a NATTY, to getting hired and fired by his almamater, to ultimately the success he is finding at UT.

I BELIEVE this was part of God's plan for Josh.
We always knew God was a Big Orange fan!
