Why we have the BEST fans in the country

I do agree but there are those times I wonder if we do not have the worst. And you know who you are.

I do love the team and the fan base, but for the record, there wasn't 39,000 people there the other night.
Unless about 10,000 people showed up after I left, there really wasn't.

We count the Staff, media, Coaches, Players and stadium workers too....

Duh

I used to think that too, then I visited a Fulmer thread.......

The Von Bell thread was a doozy.

The John Gruden on Mike and Mike takes the win! That was freaking awesome reading 10,000 idiots try to decipher the "true meaning" of the interview.

It was better than Bill Clinton's "definition of is" testimony.

I myself figured 15-20000..still not bad...just like the OW game was about 40000..a friend of mine in the Geography dept.used some remote counting techniques to get that number..dont know why they would fudge on it...20000 is a really good number for practice..

I agree with you. The only reason to fudge the number is because Jones said he wanted 40,000 fans there. It would look bad to announce 50% of that expectation.

What other program could sustain 5 losing seasons in 8 years and still have the support we do.

Not many, but, to be honest, I'm not sure that's something to be proud of. It may be the unquestioning (and to read this board, often delusional) support that makes it so easy for those in power to look for bargain hires and allow coaches to run the program into the ground before making a change.

We have some really great fans. The best? Nah.

Hell, half the fans on VN are still fence sittin, "realists" who are "cautiously optomistic" that CBJ "might" be a good coach but they wiil withold their full support ( for fear of being disappoined) "until they see how the season plays out"

Cubs fans. Packer fans. Raider fans. True believers!!! We don't hold a candle to any of those crazy m f'ers. I wish we did. Sorry to burst your bubble. GBO

Go cubs go!!!

Great points. Blind sheep aren't great fans. It's an interesting debate. Do you provide support (donations, tickets, etc.) no matter the result? Or do you demand performance for you money?

I'm not sure there is a happy medium in this. I think Hart was seeing the writing on the wall with declining attendance numbers (not the posted number, but when he looked at the crowd on gameday) and knew he needed to find someone the fans could rally around.

I think he saw what Pearl was able to do for basketball and I'm sure he's hoping that Jones will have the same effect on the football team.

You mean a Vol fan on a Vol message board thinks the Vols have the best fans?

Next you're going to tell me Alabama fans think THEY have the best fans ever.

Interesting.....I find that pro sports fans are much, much more realistic about their teams than college football. Pro fans have no qualms about admiting how bad they are. It's a nuclear meltdown if a poster on VN thinks we might not get to a bowl.

Riiiiiighttt...

The Cubs could finish 40 games out this year and EVERY Cub fan you asked would look you in the eye and tell you they were goling to the playoffs next year.

The Raiders could be 0-8 and the stands would be packed with silver and black spiked fans that don't give a damn how they look driving home if they go 0-9.

In Green Bay, a father passes away. In his will he gives the family farm to son A and he gives, to son B, two season tickets to the Packers (in the endzone).

Son A contests the will!!

Wish I could can that and pass it around to my fellow Vol fans.

Very true. However, I believe that the difference between college and pro fans can be partially explained by the fact that individual regular season games are much more critical to the perceived success of college football teams than their NFL counterparts. In the NFL, you can go 9-7 or 10-6, win your division and, if you are fortunate enough to get hot at the right time, win the Super Bowl. Lose two regular season college games and you are out of the running for the national title. If you lose one, and it happens to be the conference championship game, you may get locked out of the BCS, even if you are a top-5 team. It breeds a different type of fanaticism, particularly among fan bases of programs who have previously enjoyed sustained levels of high success.

Throw in a look at a Justin Hunter thread and posts about C Patt's intellect and you might think we have the worst fans in all of college football.

I can guarantee you that that happens within every fan base. There is always a vocal minority of idiots.

Because u literally counted every head in the mf'r, right?

No, probably because it was obvious as compared to the open expanses all around. Possibly, he realizes like most others around here that UT, is government related, thus it lies constantly about BBall and FB attendance.

Next time you go to a BBall or FB game and they announce the "attendance". Just do an eye test yourself. Remember, they have a vested interest in high attendance #s. It markets well and secures certain jobs on the hill.

Volnation does NOT represent most of the fans in the stadium, no matter how much many here think it does.

Maybe not, but the exact same things that appear in these threads are hurd in the stands of Neyland stadium.

Maybe we sit in different locations, I have never heard half the hair brained **** I have seen posted in here.
