That reminds me of how much times have changed. Al McGuire once did exactly that, because he felt the 'AA was screwing Marquette and he considered the NIT just as prestigious.I don't think NCAA tourney participation is mandatory. Bruce could always just send them a note:

The NIT should now be reserved for teams in mid and low major leagues who have great years, but fail to get their conference's auto bid. If you're in, for example, the Big East and don't qualify for the field of 68, your season should be over.I don't really have a good understanding of how the transition from the NIT being the premier tournament to the NCAA happened, but I am pretty certain that, in 2011, it is better to be in the NCAA.
I'm also pretty sure that if Bruce wrote that note, at least one Jewish man would be crucified twice.
