Why we WILL make the tournament

That's because they don't exist.

I don't think NCAA tourney participation is mandatory. Bruce could always just send them a note:

Thanks for the invitation, but we already have tournament plans. Maybe we can get together next season.

That reminds me of how much times have changed. Al McGuire once did exactly that, because he felt the 'AA was screwing Marquette and he considered the NIT just as prestigious.

I don't really have a good understanding of how the transition from the NIT being the premier tournament to the NCAA happened, but I am pretty certain that, in 2011, it is better to be in the NCAA.

I'm also pretty sure that if Bruce wrote that note, at least one Jewish man would be crucified twice.

The NIT should now be reserved for teams in mid and low major leagues who have great years, but fail to get their conference's auto bid. If you're in, for example, the Big East and don't qualify for the field of 68, your season should be over.

Didn't Knight threaten to do it one year to prove a point?

Yes. He also essentially did it multiple times at Army by making it abundantly clear that he preferred playing in the Garden to being shipped wherever the 'AA chose to send the Black Knights of the Hudson.

Wut? Is this serious? Surely not.

If it is, then his username is pretty ironic... as that's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

So you're saying going to the NIT is more respectable than getting into the NCAAT as a 9 seed and losing in the first round to an 8 seed? Nobody says, "we've been to the NCAA tournament 6 years in a row, but lost in the first round." They say, "we've made the big dance 6 years in a row."

Making the tourney > Not making the tourney... always!

I like the quote from some member that may have been in this thread: the worst part about winning the NIT is that people remember you were in the NIT.

I hadn't considered that, but it is a pretty good notion. Of course, I don't really consider the NIT very much at all.

And was adamant.

Not to be confused with Adam Ant.
