You and your buddy sound wild and crazy. He will be so proud of you when he sees your post on here. Be careful, he may double-dog dare you to touch a boob on the school bus tomorrow too while you walk up and down the isle trying to be a little badass telling people what they should and shouldn't like.
My wife dragged me to a Panic show in 2011 at Asheville Civic Coliseum. It was like a frat party. Wasnt even fun. People were getting pissed. Not to mention the cloud of mary jane over head, she was pregnant at the time. That one's on us....When I was in my teens and 20s, I'd go watch the Dead even though they were long past their best days and many of their old fans said the band was just going through the motions for the money and the recent heads were posers who were only in it for the drugs. I grew up in a suburb of Nashville and could cut through two back yards and be on the porch of Leslie Wilburn (brother of Doyle and Teddy) but I didn't know jack about bluegrass. If it wasn't for the Jerry Garcia Band, I probably never would've learned. 2020 was my first season not to renew for Bluegrass Nights at the Ryman in almost 20 years, and then it got cancelled anyway. 'Bluegrass' has become a pretty big genre in itself. I don't know how the Steel Drivers, Leftover Salmon, Greensky Bluegrass, Del McCoury, Daly and Vincent, and Rhonda Vincent all really fit together other than using mandolins, but I like them all. I go to Panic shows. I go to bluegrass shows. I think you can enjoy both.
There is definitely an intensity level in the crowd that makes me watch my back. It was there back in the days when I first saw Panic actually play in frat houses and bars in Georgia before Space Wrangler broke. The only thing that's changed is we've gotten older. My wife dragged me to a Panic show in 2011 at Asheville Civic Coliseum. It was like a frat party. Wasnt even fun. People were getting pissed. I recall before the show a guy walking into my car, then jawing to us both. Needless to say, things bout E TN that night.
I'm sure a lot of it was the venue. I've seen a lot of Panic shows. The tone of the crowd was mellow in thise days...the tone then was def harsh. Not sure what changed. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ maybe the weed got better?
To each their own. You take Panic, i'll take Telluride.
Ditto. I saw them when they were just getting going. Maybe 40-50 people at times. As it grew, too many tater digging, patchouli wearing hipsters for me. Tater digging is what I called that dancing. How a room full of people start shaking their heads and flailing their arms like zombies, in the exact same way was always a head scratcher. I was always like, “did these folks get together and decide on a dance? If so, it’s a pretty ****** dance.”View attachment 304070
Not sure I said anything about telling people what to like or not to like. Offered a suggestion that bluegrass, for me eclipsed WSP eons ago. I do appreciate your feelings on the subject, as touchy as it must be for you. To each their own.
WSP will always hold a place in my heart for the great music that was. But then I grew up.

I guess it’s the dance for private school kids to feel like they are not conforming.
Speaking of which, liked their music, but the culture around it was the most unoriginal I’ve ever seen. Talk about cultural appropriation. Those spread heads were the biggest conformist I’ve ever seen. Same ratty clothes. Same stinky patchouli. Same unkempt look. Nasty Birkenstocks. All of this was from my parents hippie generation. And most those folks are the same 30 years later. So, glad you grew up as well, but that bluegrass is the worst.
I will say those WSP girls were loose as hell though.
