Will Mason lose his job this year?

Would be funny if they fired him after a year. No one is going to coach a program like Vanderbilt if they know they only have one season(fans already want him gone after two games) to win. I've never seen a fan base become so entitled, so quickly. Years of losing, small stadium, inferior facilities, little fan base. They had two 9 win seasons and suddenly they think they're big time and coaches will come running to them. I mean, come on. Those 9 win seasons are also two of their only three winning seasons in like the past 25 years. They have some high standards despite their program having been garbage for decades. Vandy will have to resort to hiring high school coaches if they cut Mason after one year.

I think the main difference is that Vandy isn't just losing, but losing BADLY to a team like Temple, and then losing even more horribly to Ole Miss. No offensive TDs, the QB carousel, etc. If Vandy is smart, they let him go at the end of the season.

The Nashville sports media is already calling out the "wakos" for knee jerk reacting and stating that Mason cannot be evaluated until after the 2015 season. It's clear that they've gotten the word to lay off Mason.

Not from the radio. The Plaster show was ripping Mason pretty good the last 2 days and most on all 3 of the 104.5 shows are still down. Mark Howard especially has been saying he's pretty close to a lost cause. So I don't know what you mean by "lay off".

The only thing close to "ripping" I've heard them do is maybe fans saying Mason should be fired immediately. And even then it was moreso because there's no way Vandy would actually do it, not because they really think Mason is going to improve drastically.

Mark Howard is the one who said this morning that you cannot evaluate Mason until after 2015. Frank and Kevin agreed. Also, Climer was stating the same stuff in the Tennessean today. The past few days everyone ranted and now it's like the call went out to can it.

also, while I realize the circumstances were different, Vandy did fire robby Caldwell after one season so there is recent precedent.

As a Tennessee fan we need to support this Dooleyesk hire as much as we can. He needs at least 3 years to completely destroy a program, although he's on track to get it done in 1. Let's keep this guy around for as long as we can.

I don't think it really matters. The program IS toast unless they somehow hire another James Franklin.

If they fire Mason after year one, the job becomes completely toxic and no decent coach will want to touch it.

If they let Mason have a second year, they will fall even further behind in the SEC.

And no matter what option they choose, they won't have the luxury of competing against a UT program in turmoil for instate recruits.

Howard said the end of the season, not until after 2015. Climer also said given "time", he said nothing about him getting 2 seasons. The title of his column does but Climer doesn't write the titles.

And sorry, but VU doesn't have the kind of pull to tell the Nashville media to "can it".

Honestly at this point I'm among the people that feel sorry for the guy. This is his big break and it could not be any more disastrous. I'm sure he was ecstatic when he got the call, and anytime you get a huge opportunity it sits in the back of your mind "what if?" "What if I come out and my team just can't score?" "What if I lose my first game to a cupcake team?" He's living that reality right now and I doubt he's sleeping well at night. The poor guy looks like a whipped puppy in his interviews and the people interviewing him are just beating him over the head and he obviously doesn't know how to handle it.

Now on the flip side of that, he's also completely screwing over Patton Robinette. PR is clearly, indisputably, undoubtedly the better of the 2 QB's and was even named the starter, only to be pulled after going 4-6 in his first 6 throws. He hasn't seen the field since. Mason obviously just liked Rivers better and was always looking for a reason to put him in, regardless of the fact that Rivers is awful. I mean..... terribly awful.

But yeah to answer the OP in short, they lose to UMass this weekend and he doesn't make it through the season.

Side note: in all this I certainly don't feel sorry for their fans, not in the least bit. Screw their fans. I saw a post the other day after the Ole Miss game that said "UT doesn't look good. They've played a couple of cupcakes and struggled. But with the way we're playing even they could probably beat us."

Unbelievable.

He talked **** about UT all offseason having done nothing.

If they keep that guy 2 years it will take another 4 to undue the damage. I'm interested to see how they handle it. They'd be better off with some top shelf HS coach IMO.

I think we need to keep a little perspective here. This is Vanderbilt we're talking about here, not a football school. For them to have the balls to fire a coach midway through his first year would be a disaster of epic proportions. Who would want the worst job in the SEC when they know they could get canned at the drop of a hat? Their Administrators can't be that blind. It's just bad business.

They won't fire him midway through the season. No school would do that.

Most coaches would probably feel confident they could beat 2-10 Temple.

He loses this weekend and the chances of them winning 1 or less goes way up. Thats gonna change some minds. New guy or not. He's got a lot better players than Robby Caldwell flopped with.
