It seems like we may be headed this way, ala Spurrier (that Sleaze) during his FL days.
Jones has astounded me as a tireless coach, recruiter and cheerleader for our beloved Vols, but is he making a mistake not naming a starting QB only 13 games from the opener?
Could he not "Officially" name Worley and then "Unofficially" let Peterman, Dobbs et al know that the job is still very much open if one of them will just go out and take it?
What do you guys think?
Now flame away in the great Volnation tradition!
.
Anyone but Worley, I have seen what he can do and have not been impressed. I think the other 3 prospects have much higher ceilings!
Sometimes well sometimes nsm.
The year they did the Beecher switch comes to mind.
I agree with you fundamentally but I still say you only take this approach if you aren't that confident in the guy getting 1st team reps. I've already mentioned it being a short week things will likely remain as is, meaning Worley is defacto due to experience.
Jmo, but I think Peterman gives us the best chance to win and excell in this offense. With our young, but talented group of WR's, a mobile QB that can extend plays could be the difference in a few games this year. Peterman looks like he's progressed a lot compared to his spring game performance, and I think he will ultimately win the job at some point this season.
Also, after hearing all the accounts regarding Worley so far in practice I would be pretty shocked if he was named starter for the opener right now. Word of mouth is that he has been nothing short of horrible.
You said "However, I think Worley is going to play better than many of you." If he plays worse than many of us, we're in for a long season.I like all 4 though my attempts to explain what I believe the process to have been and what its likely conclusion will be will make some believe I am pro Worley. All other things being equal, I like the guys with wheels too. Peterman is the most physically talented of the group. He has the best arm and according to the little info we have seems to be the fastest. He hurt his chances of starting in the spring with poor decisions and inaccurate throws. Those are things that will improve over time if he stays dedicated.
If Worley stumbles then I think Peterman has probably helped his cause this fall but he has primarily run with the 2's against the 2's. There is a pretty significant drop off from the 1's to the 2's on D.
However I think Worley is going to play better than many of you. As a freshman, his best opportunity to prove what he could do was MTSU. The pocket wasn't collapsing all day and some WR's actually got open. He played well.
The OL this year will give him time. I believe that Azzani's receivers will get open. My major concern for all of these QB's is that WR's are going to destroy trust by dropping a bunch of balls. One moment of hesitation before throwing to a guy can lead to a break up or INT that is blamed on the QB... even though it may just be a lack of trust in the receiver.
