Wimbledon: It doesn't get any better

incredible men's final today.

That was absolutely incredible. Might be premature to say, but that might have been the best tennis match I've ever seen. Once Federer got going, it was just an all out war. More great shots than I can even remember.

McEnroe said it was the best he's ever seen. works for me.

i didn't really have the intention to watch much of it today, but by the 3rd set couldn't watch anything else.

3rd and 4th set tiebreaks, 5th set going 9-7? That was crazy.

However, I've heard some people saying Federer is done. I think he's far from it. Mono can hit some people hard and I wouldn't be surprised to see him win the US Open. He'll definitely rack up a few more majors before his career is done.

Hopefully with Nadal and Djokovic coming up so well, men's tennis can be exciting for quite some time.

Any other time Novak would be getting great talk from the media. With Nadal and Federer's dominance, however, he hasn't. I don't believe Federer is done, but I have to say that Roger has peaked and within the next 2-3 years his stranglehold on the field will be over. After today I have to give Rafeal the nod on coming to Wimbledon and taking one from Roger. Roger couldn't do the same to Rafeal at the French. I'm not a big tennis fan, but I enjoy the sportsmanship that Nadal and Federer show each other

Losing in the second round will not get you any great talk from the media. In fact, you're not likely to get any positive talk at all. Notice we haven't heard anything about Sharapova in about two weeks. Also, it's a little early to say anything about Federer. He's only 26 (almost 27) and some people battle mono for over six months. Don't be so quick to count him out.

i pretty much agree with Bill.

i don't think we'll see Federer dominate like he used to, but he's not done.

Agreed, also like doozer, I couldn't tear myself away from the match. I don't think Roger has peaked as much as I think Nadal has improved. Also I agree with Tenn07 re the great sportsmanship shown by both, and it appeared to be genuine, not just for TV. It was one of those matches you hate there had to be a loser.

My advice certainly isn't worth taking at this subject(other than the slams I watch ZERO tennis) but I've felt for the past year or two that Roger's time on top would be limited. I like him and Nadal a whole lot, but up until today I'd be reluctant to give Nadal any advantage of being #1 overall in tennis. But with Rafael defeating Roger here and Roger getting blasted at the French I think Nadal has earned the right to be #1. I can only wish that both get upset at the US Open and Blake can win(that sure is wishful thinking) but I feel that the US is an imporant match for Roger. If Nadal takes that one then I think you have to consider Nadal the best at the present time.

Oh, and to give you an idea about how knowledgeable of a tennis fan I am, I knew nothing of Federer and mono.

Federer got mono at the start of the year. Totally messed him up for the Aussie, yet he still made something like his 15th appearance in a grand slam semifinal. I guess it would be up to 17 now and it's something like 12 of 13 finals. That's nothing short of absurd.

I'm with broyles. Nadal and Djokovic (to an extent) have just improved because they had to. Federer is still very dominant and will not lose the number 1 ranking by the end of the year.

Federer is nowhere near the player that he was 2 years ago at this point, or it appeared that way at Wimbledon. He makes tons of backhnd errors now that he just wasn't making.

Ouple that with a drastically slower set of courts, and a Nadal has a chance, obviously. There were points in the tourney. that the grass was playing like a very slow hard court. I know they want to move away from servers dominating, but serve & volley has been removed as well and that's unfortunate for the game.

Tennis just isn't exciting as it used to be. As good as Federer is, he still doesn't serve and volley as much as I would like. He would have won the match yesterday if he had went to the net even more than he did. Give me the style of Sampras and Laver any day over the baseliners.

Regardless, a great match, yes indeed. I have heard McEnroe say "Its the best match I have ever seen" quite a few times.

Nothing will ever top the 1980 Borg-McEnroe final

i love how McEnroe only talked about himself the whole match (like always) and then did a complete 180 when he looked like he was going to mourn with Federer like they just lost a family member.

i was only on the way during Wimbledon 80, so i can say at least that yesterday was the greatest men's final i have ever seen.

I agree across the board with you.

Yesterday's match was still the highest sustained quality of play in a men's final I've seen since probably when Goran played Rafter in Wimbledon final.....(2002?..)

I agree that is the best final so far that I have seen, but anything can be topped. There ain't a horse that can't be rode, nor a cowboy who can't be throwed.
