Windy's football discussion thread.

after seeing you post this, I went back and have started listening. Sounds like Pruitt agrees with me. I get it, it's the first game after little practice, but more than just high throws, it's the fact that JG doesn't have consistent "touch". Maybe that's kind of like trying to say someone has the "clutch gene" or whatever, but Casey Clausen had a remarkable knack to know exactly where and how to place the ball. He knew when to fire a rocket, he knew when to (and more importantly which shoulder to) drop a fade in over a receiver, when to hit a receiver in stride, etc. JG hasn't shown it ever, other than in flashes. It was my knock on Dobbs too. He fired cruise missiles every opportunity he had. Maybe it's technique on JG's part. Getting his feet set when he's moving or something, I don't know. But hopefully he can sort it out. Like TFG said above, Bailey hasn't had the chance to find the timing with these new receivers either, so we are where we are.

On a different note, and I think this is very key, Pruitt seems to have calmed down. He's embraced his role as HC and understands he has to have quality relationships with the players aside from just being a teacher of the game. I think this will be HUGE when it comes to team chemistry, trust and future recruiting.

Unfortunately I don't think there is any sorting it out at this point. We know what we have in JG. Ultra competitive, passionate, easy to root for, but just doesn't have a touch with his passes.

He did avoid stupid mistakes last night, so keep doing that and we will be in all games.

A lot of belly aching going on about JG who made good decisions and had a pretty good stat line. Had the fourth best passer rating in the sec this week.
Sure he made a few bad throws, but what quarterback don't? He was under pressure on a few of those bad throws and the receivers didn't exactly bail him out on some catchable bad throws.
What about Johnson’s one handed catch on an uncatchable throw bailing out Guacamolee?

He still hasn’t learned, after all this time, to get rid of the bal instead of standing in the pocket for 20 seconds until he gets sacked.

Go back and look at all his throws. He really didn't do bad at all.

he only got sacked twice. One that I remember was actually a coverage sack. Not sure how this is your issue.

He has the worst awareness I've ever seen for an upper classman. EVER. He is a very tough kid with a lot of heart. He threw a couple of balls that should have been caught, and he threw some that had no chance of being intercepted. On some plays that were "there," the receiver would've needed to be ten feet tall, and that's a broken record at this point.
He still makes some absolutely terrible throws and doesn't see open receivers. I'm not sure that's something that can be coached, especially at this point.
There was one last night all he had to do was dump it to Gray, and there was no one within 20 yards of Gray.
He just doesn't see the field and doesn't consistently make the right decision. As a fan, he is exhausting to watch.
I don't like people who go out of their way to demean him, and I'd say he wouldn't be playing if the coaches didn't think he gave us the best chance to win games.
He still needs to get a lot better. Hopefully, he does.

that's just flat out wrong.

are you trying to earn your wrong95 nickname or something?
Have to agree. He threw high to open receivers all night. I don’t believe we all should’ve been sweating whether we win or lose the game at the end and had to thank a dumbass cock on the kick return team to seal the win.

Getting rid of the ball is a standard tool of college or professional qbs. Not learning to do that after he has been here so long doesn’t lend one to think he is a top tier qb that gives his team a chance to consistently win ball games. And it’s just one of his issues. His ability to play the position seems to stay the same over the years, not showing marked improvement with all his experience.

you can't consistently overthrow open receivers and not be getting the ball out. The two aren't mutually exclusive. He threw the ball at the right time all night. He just didn't hit targets on a lot of down the field throws. He threw them where they couldn't be intercepted (usually), but often because no one could've caught them.

He was able to throw the ball a lot because of the protection he was getting. You apparently don’t understand the concept of throwing the ball away when his receivers are covered and the pocket is breaking down.

No, I understand it. It just never was a problem last night. Like ever. As you just mentioned, he was getting the protection, so he could wait. He just missed the open receiver.

I didn't say that he didn't mess up and miss a few things but it isn't as bad as you are making it out to be.

It's weird to me. I mean that check down to Gray, not throwing into triple coverage, he made some good plays and decisions mentally. Td to Palmer was beautiful, but I agree it's the touch, It's very inconsistent. I'm not trying to bash him, just saying that he's off there. I actually feel like mentally he's improved by not making mistakes, other than that sack where he held the ball that felt like 2 mins😂. I'm hoping the lack of practice was an issue, and he's improved in his touch, and just needs more time with the wrs.

Now that is a fair assessment in my opinion.

there's no doubt last night was a huge win. To go on the road first game of the season against a competitive USC team and win is huge. When you factor in lack of practices and all of the players out, it's a big deal. That's not to say that we didn't look sloppy at times but overall I thought we out coached USC and once we settled down played pretty well.

I think the secondary missed Shamburger a lot. That's why USC was lighting us up with those slant routes in 2nd half. Slaughter just doesn't have enough experience.
