A dive is where they land, I believe. Not giving themselves up.

Best that I can tell …..you’re correct. A Dive is treated differently than a slide. In the slide they are giving themselves up so are in a vulnerable position and therefore protected but the spot is where it begins. A dive is not a defenseless position so is spotted where the ball is when the player is considered down.
