Windy's football discussion thread.

I cannot quite grasp Matthews’ argument…

He hasn’t had the playing time to prove his value and drink deeply from the NIL fountain. So, someone other than UT will front him the NIL and give him all the snaps he wants just because…

Edit: And he’s about to inherit the snaps at UT, so, walk away from that because he didn’t get the snaps he wanted last season?

The young squire is cray cray.

He read the room. Perceived he had leverage with everyone leaving around him.

I hate this is what it's turned into.

Since this is what it's turned into and I'm going to continue watching it, I'd almost be disappointed if he hadn't. KnowImsayin?

Contracts and other controls will come. Give it time.

Remember when everyone was saying you can’t give these kids money, they don’t know what they are doing.

Now everyone pissed they are better at business than they thought.

Okay, I have no idea if it's true but the latest is Matthews has an issue with Pope the position coach and it's either Heupel fires Pope or Matthews leaves.

Have no clue if or how much is true.

Did make me think. Let's pretend it is true. Whatcha do?

I know what I do without hesitation.
I saw on r/ockytop that lots of guys have issues with Pope and that’s why they’re leaving. It was screenshots from a WR that left instagram dms.

Probably all hogwash but it’s odd to see it twice.

Four years ago, CJH took over a dumpster fire of a program with 54 scholarship players and sanctions from prior administrations. NIL debuted during his first year. He changed the culture and rebuilt the program, graduating significant VFLs each of the last four years. Just four years in, and Tennessee was in the first expanded playoff.

BUT, tOSU spent three weeks intensely studying and scheming for Tennessee’s offense and defense. They strategized and practiced how to defeat the Vols. Their convincing victory in Ohio Stadium has everyone second guessing CHJ. Why didn’t the Vols coaches make a similar effort and develop a scheme specific to defeating the Buckeyes on their home field? Why didn’t the Vols have enough wrinkles to counter tOSU’s preparation?

And these questions opened Pandora’s box of doubts about CJH and his staff. Departures to the portal are revealing his feet of clay? He’s not as good as he’s seemed? Everyone has figured out his offense. He’s a one-trick pony who cannot adapt. Pope is driving away WRs. The staff can’t develop talent. Soon, Vols football will collapse into the embarrassment that was Dooley/Jones/Pruitt…

Jimminy Cricket. Some VNsters need to check their packages. Chicken Little appears reasonable by comparison. 🙄

Unlike the others he has (alleged) worked his butt off in practice and done things the right way. Coaches believe he’s worth the investment….the others were not

Yes. Fans are pissed about players’ grasp of basic economics and leverage.

I disagree but I'm not sure why yet.

Maybe because I don't think the fans that are pissed are that dumb. Or maybe I didn't see the players actions as basic economics and leverage understanding as much as selfishness and greed.

I also try to see what youre saying through my eyes as a fan that's not pissed but disappointed and why I'm disappointed. It's not for that reason.

I guess I need to start here In the orange highlight.

Yes, I said you can't give the kids hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars, but I wasn't necessarily thinking they wouldn't know what to do or do with it.

I was thinking more along the lines of how it would change them and how it would translate in the locker room. That was my only concern.

Of course not every fan is pissed. But there’s a lot of transfer portal and NIL crying out there. Not saying they are dumb just that they got part of it wrong (kids can’t be given the responsibility of money).

Many of these same fine people celebrated Hendon Hooker, Dalton Knecht, and the Vols baseball team. Look at Hooker and Knecht….do they get drafted as high as they did without leaving their school for the better visibility at UT? Who can blame them for bettering their personal opportunities?

For myself and my career, I try to maximize my earnings. I’ve never turned down an opportunity for a raise or promotion but certainly could live on less income. I call that basic personal economics and leveraging your situation/strengths. Others might call it greed and selfishness. Idk.

Having said all that, annual and in season free agency is not sustainable and should be corrected going forward through contracts or some other measures.

No, I don't see you as greedy and selfish. You're a grown man with a family. Those players aren't. I know some of them may have kids etc, but in general they're 18-20 year old kids.

Maybe I'm just being judgemental and also wrong. But when I think about them getting all this money I think about that dude I saw on the sidelines at Arkansas with the gold battleship anchor chains around his neck, in uniform. And pictures of kids with Lamborghini's and Mercedes dressed like pimps.

I don't care and I'm not jealous by any means, I just think about the the guys in the locker room. Might cloud my judgement.

Anyway, nothings perfect. I'm using this message board for it's intended purpose. Lol.

Transfer Portal and NIL are separate issues to me. NIL, I didn't want to pay players, they make enough already; Transfer Portal is shear madness. Jump portal once in undergrad then 5 year if you want to go. This every year stuff is bull chit.

eggsackly, for everyone of the kids that get Lambo money, there are many that don't get anything but what they used to get which was High Dollar if you are out of state. But no one wanted to address that.
