It really is a chess match
I was coaching middle school football (which is hard enough I can’t imagine big time ball) I had the Defense. We were playing Baylor and they kept throwing a wheel route to the tailback out of the backfield. I ripped into the OLB. The coaches kid. The HC said to me “that’s the corners job”. Their wide outs were fast so I said “you can’t release the wide outs, our safety is to slow, that’s MY OLBs job” so he yelled over me to the corner to come up to make that play. 2 plays later we were burned for a TD on a deep pass. I looked at the HC and said “well who could have seen that coming”.
Too often guys who played can’t figure it out either.
Bottom line, coaching isn’t easy. It’s actually damn near impossible.
