Sorry bud. I have clients who own liquor stores, who have been in our community for decades, and it is definitely putting a hurt on them.

Do you think Costco is going to train their staff in oenology? Hell no.

Amazing how oblivious people are to the damage already done by those like Walmart. Oh well, convenience.

Try Meiomi Pinot Noir. Wine snobs will say it's not a "real" pinot noir, but we really enjoy it. Price is extremely variable, but if you can catch it at $12-14, it's a steal.

You might like some of the less expensive red American bordeaux-style blends. Cline Ancient Vines Zin or Cashmere and Ravenswood are other good affordable reds.

As for whites: intro recommendations -- Conundrum White blend, Kimmel Four Blocks Chard, Butternut or Creme de lys for a sweeter/smoother chard.

Meiomi is very good for the price.

Another red I like is Layer Cake Cab.

Crios is a good value producer from Argentina. You can also find good value from the Cote Du Rhone region of France.

I would recommend you try a variety of them. I love reds- Cabernets and Pinot Noirs, even Zinfadels, however a white is good on a hot summer day. Whites- go with Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio.

I do a little online review searches before purchasing

I don't think I have ever tried that.......thanks for the suggestion lol

Blandy's and Broadbent are safe bets for inexpensive bottles, usually aged 3 - 5 years in cask. Moving up in price 10 year old and vintage Madeira's are terrific.

La Crema is a very good red, and easy to drink. A notch up from Meiomi but I will drink both.

A good port is always a good choice IMO

Yes it is, I drink a lot of Port. I am also a big fan of Madeira.

Sandeman 20 year Tawny Port is delicious! It's hard for me to find.

Being from Oregon we have a ton of great Pinot Noir. Pretty much most 2012s were great. Granted they probably aren't that cheap, but if you find one it's worth giving it a try. Maysara is one of my favorites. Not sure what's available from Oregon in your part of the country. Have fun find what you like and enjoy.

I am a big fan of wines from Willamette Valley. I have been up there wine tasting a couple of times. Stoller actually has a well priced Pinot that is pretty tasty.

I enjoy Willamette wines, but Russian River Valley Pinots are a favorite. We'll be back in CA wine country this September. Cannot wait.
