Winston's post game gibberish; McCarron's Mom and girlfriend

Anyone questioning Winston's intelligence based solely on a post-game celebratory press conference should have their intelligence questioned.

In defense of those doing so, its been more than that, don't you think? He's had one or two episodes prior to the post game comments where he has not been terribly coherent.

I'm not saying FSU is alone in this, btw.

I heard an interview with Nick Marshall last week that was a whole lot worse. Heck, I always thought Heath Shuler came off a little dim, and he got elected to Congress.

Corch Urban Meyers and Tim Tevo agree

Heath isn't the worst. I mean, one Senator thought Okinawa would tip over if we put too much equipment on one end

They're jocks. They're kids. Why are people surprised when they sound less than eloquent?

This or maybe where he's from people talk like this.. I know it's a stretch. I believe as sad to say it most kids talk like this

The bottom line is most all of us, in a non-public setting, use improper English

Heck, I use it. It depends on the setting

But I have always been able to change that if I'm speaking in public

You just can't use slang and come off as sounding intelligent. You may be, but its peoples first impressions of you that really stick. Kids should be cognizant of this and should be taught from an early age that its not cool to sound like an idiot.

Nick Marshall, Cam Newton, Ontarrio McCaleb, Bo Jackson (while at Auburn) were some of the worst sounding interviews ever. Bo overcame that though.

Since when are college football players judged on their eloquence and articulation? Who cares?

I can vaguely remember Bo Jackson at Auburn. That poor guy could barely speak.

You can't possibly be this naive

So colleges are not responsible for teaching their students?

After all, a college is an institute of higher learning

So, we should just shuttle them through like they do in public schools?

And people wonder why we struggle to catch up.

The dumbing down of America comes full circle

I agree with this.

But let's not kid ourselves. When the average fan looks at these players, he doesn't see college students. He sees, for lack of a better term, NFL minor leaguers.

You are so right

And it is sad that its come to this.

We are essentially saying that we don't care how dumb you are, just as long as you can run fast, catch, or throw the ball.

There was a player, whose name I can't recall at the moment, who had graduated from Arkansas. He had signed an NFL contract that was loaded with incentives he had no chance of accomplishing. The contract was so team-friendly it was absurd. The guy sued to have the contract voided on the grounds that he was completely illiterate. He presented evidence that he could not read beyond a 2nd or 3rd grade level, and yet he had a diploma from the University of Arkansas.

I know there was a player from Auburn that was similar. Had a degree but couldn't read

College classes, the draft, post-football career, this thread? For example, given two similarly skilled players going through NFL team interviews, which player do you think an organization is more likely to consider/grade higher? A player that provides thoughtful, well articulated answers, or a player that sounds like he needs remedial English? I thought Winston sounded a bit ridiculous as well, but, as others have said, I'm inclined to let a post-game interview slide.
