With a playoff system is SEC pride important?

Yay new candidate for World's Dumbest Post Award

yeah right...the SEC is notorious for playing FCS schools...even Vandy does it...I sure there are a few lesser FBS schools that would love to have the money the SEC pays FCS schools and would be just as an easy of a win.
and to play a FBS school would much pad you SOS than playing a FCS...just think...Tennessee VS Boise State....oh wait...that would lower Boise State's SOS.

Might as well be proud to play in the best conference. If they all sucked and we dominated we'd just be another Northern Illinois.

Now that we have a playoff system is there really any reason to root for our conference? Don't really think having the best conference makes a big difference when you only have to be a top 4 team.

If we don,t have pride in our Conference, why be a member? Why would be willing to share revenue with other member of our Conference if those revenues were reduced to those of the lesser Conferences? Not every University has the ability to raise revenue on the same scale with Notre Dame. Does anyone believe that more than 2-3 teams would be able to compete with ND or Texas in raising enough money needed to compete with those teams in today's financial environment? We need pride in our Conference now more than ever.

You realize EVERY team schedules a few cupcakes every year, right? Regardless of conference.

FYI - Tennessee was one of the last schools to hold out on playing a Div 1A (FCS) school. The streak was broken in 2010 when we played UT-Martin.

Notre Dame is the only remaining team in FBS that hasnt played one.

I always pull for SEC when they are playing outside the conference. The way I look at it is that if no one outside the conference can beat an SEC team, then it makes all the teams look better.

Was I glad to see A&M beat Bama, heck yes I was. That was great and I enjoyed it quite a bit. If all of the teams you play are ranked and you win, you will climb in the polls yourself quite a bit. If you beat non-ranked teams you don’t get very far very fast.

It benefits all of the teams in the SEC for them to win all out of conference games, so I pull for the SEC as it benefits Tennessee in the long run. Quite selfish if you really think about it, but it works.

One exception...bama!

If you enjoy the fact that finishing at or near the top of the SEC is a sure top 5-6 finish nationally, then you should continue to wish the other teams in the conference well.

Yes. Pull for your conference. Playing a higher SOS can still help you get into the Top 4.

In a given season (season, not post season) yes, but I'm not sure if the OP's hinting here at "should we be cheering for others SEC teams to win bowl games and NCs?"

Technically, you're correct. But don't for a second think that scheduling the Navy's of the world makes it any better.

UT's record against the mountain west (FCS schools):
2008/11/08 Tennessee 7 - Wyoming 13 L
2006/09/09 Tennessee 31 - Air Force 30 W
2004/09/05 Tennessee 42 - UNLV 17 W
2002/08/31 Tennessee 47 - Wyoming 7 W
1999/09/04 Tennessee 42 - Wyoming 17 W

So other than one hiccup during what is undoubtably one of UT's worse stretch of football in our history we considered the Mountain West (conference to your blessed Broncos) our FCS games I guess and we are 4-1 against the Mountain West.

What does that say about Boise? Why do you think it is SO tough for the smurf turf eaters to get respect? Just like in life your judged by the company you keep and its the same in sports, you are judged by your competition. Bring Boise to the SEC west and then lets see how often they are in the top 25.

I am a VFL, UT is in the SEC and I am DAMN proud of both.

Folks not pulling for the SEC in non conference play is just plain dumb. You are ranked and judge by the competition you play and since we play in the SEC we want it to be know as the best. Even with the playoffs rankings will take the level of competition with you in your conference into account.

So cheer for the SEC so that when we rise to the top again we will be known as the best of the best. GBO!!! and Go SEC!!!

Take the biggest hammer you've got and you still can't pound simplicity into their heads. Conference wins we win.

I was thinking about that yesterday watching some games. I don't think I have one ounce of SEC pride. I wanted them all to lose in horrible and bloody ways.

I have no reason to think that if Georgia beats Nebraska, then Tennessee will reap some sort of benefit from it. None. Sorry. The SEC has ingrained its overall dominance in everyone's mind for now. It's going to take a good while for that to change.

In fact, maybe it will help Tennessee more if someone like Georgia loses since we are actually rooting against teams that we are competing head to head against in recruiting. Maybe Mark Richt loses his head after a heartbreaking loss and drops an F-bomb in front of a recruits mom, which ruins his pasty white image in the families mind. Maybe that poor kid just takes his talents elsewhere. "Time to get away from these sore losers. Hey... Let's see what old Butch is building over there in Funkytown, Tennessee."

A UGA or FLA win doesn't make the sting from this failure of a season hurt any less. Oh yeah, and it's just more fun to root against them to me. So there's that.

Here's where I disagree.. Just a decade or two ago it was the mighty BIG-10 that every ESPN commentator declared was the conference of champions. MI vs OSU was treated like the game that decided who was going to be ranked #1. In fact that perception started changing we we THUMPED the might UM and stunned the nation in doing so.

I love to see USC, OREGON, TEXAS, OSU, PENN STATE and other big non SEC names on the schedule for SEC teams.

I get it. But why should I care about the conference? And don't say money. I know that it's important and all, but to me, personally.... It's totally irrelevant. At this point the conference is so hard that we can't even pull ourselves out of a downward spiral.

I'm not saying I want the SEC to do bad, or to not be regarded as the best conference. We have that. I just want Tennessee to win, and our hated rivals to suffer. So whenever that happens, I will be having much more fun on Saturdays. This is about football and happiness. Seeing Georgia lose pertains to both.

It's just that victories against an undefeated FL, Bama or UGA just push us up further in the polls than say undefeated NC State or Louisville... Because they are SEC teams and week in week out they play what most pundits believe is the best college football schools in the country. I understand hating BAMA, Gators and Dawgs and I do cheer against them but usually when they play Ole Miss, Vandy, A&M and other SEC teams lol...

Hey to each their own so long as the VOLS RISE TO THE TOP!!! GBO!!

The problem is that the more they continue doing better while we continue being middle of the road to poor, the tougher those become to come by.

It's one thing if we're beating those teams once and a while during those periods of success their having (or if we are enjoying success ourselves)...but otherwise it just can become a widening gap (especially while we're not good).

I don't think it's about SEC pride as much as it is about letting the Texas and Notre Dames run roughshod over college football. We'll never have control of the media, refs, money, or fame that these schools have. Texas could buy UTK tomorrow if it wanted to! All we've got is the conference.

SEC pride is stupid. I'm not going to cheer against teams like UF and Bama all year just to turn around and hope they win their bowl games.

Texas can't consistently run roughshod over Oklahoma, let alone all of college football.
