With Cut gone and Trooper (maybe),what about our recruits?

Shoot- it isn't CPF's first rodeo either. The last big time player he recruited was who?...Kelly Washington (??) (I will give you Jason Witten who is showing he is a great player)
Our O needs some first rate RB's- not good- not average- but excellent, like Jamal, Chuck, or even Little Man. We need excellent DT's not good, like Haynesworth or Mr. Outland. For the last 6-years, he has been recruiting "good" for years- but unless Phil steps out of his comfort zone and hires a "great" OC, he is going to lose alot more than just recruits. He can't take another year of our biggest rivals hanging 100 on us with no response. He is so afraid of being Bill Battle'd or Johnny Major'ed, he is petrified of bringing in fresh and hot coaching talent. If he doesn't get over that phobia soon, he is going to lose the talent he needs to compete, no coaching to coach the players up, and then his job.

AGREE COMPLETELY

It needs to be remembered that before Cut was announced as a candidate at Duke and before Trooper was interviewed at Baylor, this recruiting class was already ranked about 40th by Rivals and Scout with no 5* prospects having expressed any overwhelming interest in UTK. There are people, probably even some on the staff, who are going to try and lay a lackluster recruiting season at the feet of the departed coaches but the TRUTH is that this was going to be a down year anyway.

I think we're going to hear a lot of blame assigned to guys who are not here anymore for the bowl game, recruiting class and probably next year's record. Don't buy into it.

I do agree with you there! On the recruiting front I think they should make the RB from frostproof Fla a priority...he has committed to UGA but with their backfield stacked maybe he could be swayed.

I think I get the gist of your post but c'mon, just how many Chucks and Jamals are out there? (I do know Rivals #6 APB Jeffrey Demps is down to us and FL) Better still, when was the last time one of those was in-state? So now we gotta go steal them from somebody else's back yard and you make it sound so simple? Last year only SC had more 5* recruits than us. Haynesworth? There are only 2 5* DTs on Rivals and both of them are playing for the home school. The only 3 in the top ten that aren't already verbaled list us. Like I said earlier, I follow the idea behind your post but geez, it sounds like you're leaning towards we should "expect" Chucks/Jamals/Alberts to just be strolling in here all the time. That just doesn't happen...anywhere.

And even with all that, and I'm sure HV can expand more on this, considering we took 32 commits last season I don't know how we're going to sign too much of a class this season simply due to the numbers.

A lot of factual well-grounded statements in there. Therefore, that post wont be well recieved by many posters. I think it is a very good post though.

Listen- I get it. I am not trying to throw the proverbial baby out. Ed over in Ole Miss got his recruits and still couldn't win. I also understand that part of the game and that we stole Jamal from Atlanta before Richt shut us out. I get that game- however- we haven't gotten those top skill positions consistently. We use to play smash mouth ball and I know CPF loves that style- but we haven't had it in forever. If you don't have the talent, you scheme or outcoach. That has been lean as well in my opinion.
I can lose without grumbling when we come and bash the other team in the mouth- like our defense did in the SECCG. I understand and agree with many alumn who say the linemen have gotten soft, or that we don't have the running backs we used to have. You can even sharp shoot some top recruits once in a while (check on Berry's lineage not nec. the recruiting) but you have to get top flight (5*) skill position folks every few recruiting seasons based on people that don't turn out. I don't see that here. I see it in Florida, Georgia, Texas, USC, etc. It does happen.
I think it has been lean since at least 2001 based on the performance on the field. (In 2001- our rematch against LSU was just awful- you could see their talent next to ours). Yes, we may be spoiled, but just finishing top 25 is not good enough- esp. with our bowl record. I believe our fans are sophisticated enough to see when we are in games and fighting down to the last breath. I have not seen the team taken to task when that happens. However, that doesn't always happen.
Look even to CEO Tub's approach in Auburn when he hired some new talent to "mix it up" when things looked rough. Just like there, CPF needs to carpe diem
Besides, how many other coaches would get the slack that CPF is getting? Majors and Battle sure didn't.

That's a big post that covers a lot of ground and some of it starts to ease away from recruiting but I smell what you're cooking. You still seem to short-sell some of the recruitment though, particularly with the idea of "sharp shooting" talent "once in a while". Like I said previously, ONLY USC brought in more 5* recruits (per Rivals) this last season than we did. In fact, let's recap a little on some of the talent we've signed of late with an eye towards skill positions & D lineman (per your original post):

Mahelona, Fisher and Martin were/are all 5* linemen. The first was a good solid tackle, the 2nd has had shoulder issues and had to be moved inside due to need. The latter is a Fr but also had a knee issue.

Morley, Berry, O'Neal & Vinson also came here carrying 5*. Morley was lost to academics, O'Neal just seems lost, Vinson seemed a bust at WR but shows some real promise at DB and Berry is everything we'd hoped he'd be. But just 5* is still selling us short when you consider:

Bolden- #4 DT (these are NATIONAL #'s per position)
Coker- #2 APB
Crompton- #2 Pro Style QB
Hardesty- #9 Ath
R Henderson- #8 SS DE
Coleman- #10 PS QB
Creer- #6 RB
G Jones- #5 Ath

And that's not even all the 5* players we've signed (omitted all OL/LB) and the above only includes top 10 per position. You mention our RB's but forget that we got highly sought after players but Coker is gone, Hardesty has had horrible luck with injury and Creer is just a true Fr. I guess what I'm getting at is it's not just as easy as saying "we don't get players". We need players that can stay in school, stay healthy and fill positions of need.

I am not sold on the fact that a recruit would get excited about Kippy.

He was a solid recruiter when he was at UT last time. He is very charasmatic. And now when he talks to recruits he shows them his NFL resume and they will be very excited. They want to get to the NFL and they will see him as somebody who can do that for them.

...as opposed to chest-bumping Trooper the Magnificent and his zero seconds of offensive coordinator or NFL experience?

I think one of the reasons the class is down this year is the lack of in state talent.

That and the fact that alot of these kids didn't really grow up as UT fans(Hurst, Jones, Jordan, most of the other Memphis kids).

if we have to rely mostly on kids that grew up Vol fans, then we're gonna be in rough shape

No, but let's see.

Hurst-committed to LSU(LSU is going to the NCG)
Jones-committed to Bama(he's a Bama dynasty)
Jordan-committed to Bama(didn't like what our coaches told him)

And the Memphis kids have alot of other schools(Bama, Ole Miss, etc) that are closer than UT. Plus we really don't have an ace recruiter for Memphis.
