With Our Horrid DT Situation...

I don't get how Chavis gets hated on here. Chavis was promoted to defensive coordinator in 1995 and has produced some of the stingiest defenses in college football. Since 1995, Chavis' defenses have held their opponents below a 100-yard rushing average in six seasons, and eight times during that span the Vols have ranked among the top three in the SEC in total defense.

I don't get the hate either. Sure, the Mustang package was the biggest waste of time in history, but he was solid year in and year out.

I'd take him over whatever the hell Monte Kiffin put out there last season.

The Chavis lovers need only look at situational stats to realize that the overall stats picture did not tell a full or true story. Take some time and look at 2rd down stats, 3rd and long, etc... His schemes did not sync the coverage techniques with the pass rush.

The Chavis lovers? I've been ripped on for liking Chavis, Fulmer, Hamilton, etc.. and I have to come out with facts and stats to back myself up. Usually it feels like I'm surrounded by gators. This is UT fanbase how is it that everytime I say I like something about UT or UT history I have 5 naysayers. I'm not expecting a rah rah party or anything but everytime someone says something positive there are 5 gators ready to chomp.

it is aweful that we lost JC Copeland AND Brandon Willis. Every DT Fulmer recruited toward the end of his time either didn't make it in school or got kicked off the team. Its unreal how we have NO ONE.

I hope the staff is looking for some top JUCO and Prep School DT's that can come in as EE's and contribute next season. Losing two DT's already hurts, can't put a band aid to stop this bleeding.

They are trying to get one of the better JUCO DT's from Arizona Western. IMO, it is why we signed Andrew Power. Power fills a position of need, but he could also help in getting Jesse Williams.

how many times in cjc's tenure were we ranked #1 in total D in the SEC?

how many key games were lost due to gags by cjc's D?

have i answered your question?

I wasn't asking a question. How can you be a bama fan and a UT fan?

Gary Brown( Ex-Gator) just enrolled at East Mississippi CC he's a former 5* recruit that will be a Top 10 juco player this year. He has a relationship with Chuck Smith from a few years back.

I'd be more excited if he wasn't expelled from UF for beating women... You know if Meyer is actually going to discipline a player enough to kick him off the team that it has to be serious.

Men should NEVER hit women but what should happens to a woman that slaps a man(first) then calls the police and has man arrested?....by all accounts thats what happen that night...Meyer's hand was forced (rumor) because girl(#2) is a UF legacy. Meyer allowed him to stay on scolly thru the summer so he could complete all the classes he needed so he'll have 3 years remaining after one year in juco(RS last year).

bolded part looked like a question to me.

i'm not a bama fan -- far, far, from it. read the print on the avatar.

Bolded part is actually a declarative statement. Just pointing that out. :hi:

If I'm Tennessee I'd be all over him already. They need to go after guys like this and Toby Jackson without a doubt if they want to get back to a competitive program sooner rather than later.

Plus I think his situation is well documented with the whole girl being a UF legacy. Basically Meyer had no other choice than to dismiss him because of that.

Dude, we lost to Nebraska in '97 because of Chavis. We lost to LSU in 2002 because of Chavis. We lost to LSU in 2007 (regular season) because of Chavis, We lost to Georgia on the "hobnail boot" game because of Chavis.

How many ways can you say it....THE GUY COULD NOT STOP 3rd AND LONG!

We lost to Nebraska in 97' because they were a far superior team. Unfortunately, I was in the Orange Bowl to witness it first hand.

I agree with the OP. I'm amazed that a school that has produced such defensive line talents as Reggie White, John Henderson, Albert Haynesworth, Jessie Mahelona, Dan Williams, Justin Harrell, Will Overstreet, Leonard Little, etc is having this much trouble at the DT position!

Not saying I disagree, however go back and look at the stats. We had Nebraska held to 3rd down many many times throughout the game only to see them complete short passes across the middle for first downs. Plus we did not play fundamentally sound football at all in the first half. It was just another classic case of Chavis refusing to make any in game adjustments.

The first half is when we played them close. They came out in the 3rd and (IIRC) didn't throw the ball once while running the ball down our throats all the way to the end zone. They never looked back. The big difference was the conditionong. They dominated the 2nd half while the Vols wilted.

Of course, I was younger then and prety much toasted by that point so I may not remember things perfectly.:)
