With players leaving...(class numbers discussion)

That is how I think the new rules work, but I wonder about the walk-ons. How soon can they get a scholarship if the school has one available to offer? Looks like we might have a few to offer in that manner.

Have to be in school two years before getting a scholarship or they count against the 25/year. After two years they only count against the 85 total.

Is that a new rule?? We signed 28 just last year.

Actually I believe it is an old rule that is just being enforced more to the original intent. I personally feel the NCAA gave Butch some leeway to get us competitive, but now that some of the ways he ran players off is coming to light, they decided to tighten the loopholes.

Now, I don't know when or if Butch will get another HC job, but I can almost guarantee he won't get any exceptions then. Just as our program is not being allowed any now.

butch, as well as many other coaches, took advantage of the rules that allowed you to massage #'s for a particular class. it wasn't some special circumstance or anything.

They don’t allow blueshirting starting this season...changes enacted in April 2017. In Butch’s first two classes he relied on backcounting his EE’s to the previous seasons...also no longer allowed. Remaining option is greyshirting. Which entails delaying enrollment until January...for a spot in NEXT season’s class.

i thought you could blue shirt, but they'd count forward to the next class? and grey shirts were gone?

sheesh, i can't keep with all the shirting.:eek:lol:

No...it’s the opposite of what you said...in inverse.

Of course agreed but guys like Warrior, Chandler, Tuttle etc. are needed. UT needs players like that to stick around.

Of course. The point was those players that are 2nd/3rd depth chart players who are not in the long term plans

Can we sticky this and let the numbers discussion happen here without new random posts? My guess is we'll take 23-25.

the 247 guys said it is a hard limit at 25 - and apparently with players leaving early for the draft TN can sign 25 now in the class.

Someone posted in another thread that we can only take 23 due to a couple of current players counting on this year's class. Don't know if that's 100% correct though.

no, the way i understand the rules at this point, you will never "sign" more than 25 in a given class. you can blue shirt still i believe, but that will still count against your next class.

i'm not sure about EE's, but i believe they will count against that year's class they enroll in, you can't back count them.

it's a pretty hard cap at 25/year, 85 scholly's. so over a 4 year period, you need to lose 15 total, but no more than that...

i don't think we'll have a full 85 next year due to early NFL draft departures.

the only way i've seen to get that up to 85 is to offer Walk Ons. but only Jr/Sr...can't offer Fr/So walk ons anymore, unless you want them to count against that year's class.

Well I guess this will be a boom for walk-on Srs. to get one year of paid tuition until the Scolly can be used for a 4* or better recruit.

My question is if you transfer in as a preferred walk-on, are you automatically eligible for a scolly?

Looking at the Roster on UTSports.com:

Jack Jones Medical
Boulware left team
J. Kelly, KMAC, Gaulden declared Early
17 Scholarship Seniors

That's 22 Schollys available

Also: T. Kelly if he doesn't come back for Redshirt SR year
Also: JJennings if he doesn't come back to the team
Also: Some Kid named Holden Foster was a Senior...don't know if he was a Scolly or walk-on.

That is up to 25 Scollys available.

Don't know if there were other unused schollys or if anyone else left the team that I forgot about.

There could also be a few transfers in work that we don't know about.
