Wood bats

Speaking of bats, Vandy is no longer in the top 25 and Ole Miss is hanging on to that 25th spot. We crushed their souls. lol
That and I may be in the minority, but those teams just aren’t as great as everyone thought they would be. I know Auburn is much improved but they shouldn’t beat a team as talented as Vanderbilt 2 out of 3. Something just isn’t right with them. They’ve now lost 4 series this season already and have gone 3-7 in their last 10 games. Ole Miss just doesn’t have quality enough pitching to last. They are currently on a 4 game losing streak and have gone 3-8 in their last 11 games.

Vanderbilt will be a factor when all is said and done.

Was in the stands at Camden Yards one day sitting near home plate at club level when Machado hit a 465 footer into the left field upper deck. That was a sound I'll never forget. Like a huge lightning crack coming off that wooden bat. The very instant it was hit the sound told you it was long gone. It is a music, indeed. (And that one isn't even in the top five all time in that ballpark)

Josh Hamilton had the most distinctive sound coming off the bat I've ever heard. Got to see him play many times in his prime.

I am with you 💯. The season might prove they were not that good this year. I am interested in how we do against Alabama, Florida and Georgia because they seem to be playing better than Ole Miss and Vandy.

It has been a while since I have been to Smokies Park but I think that it is a pitchers's park.

The Tennessee team should be excited about playing at a minor league stadium tomorrow night.

I love it. Personally, I'd like to see college baseball transition to using wood bats full-time, but I understand why they don't. It's very expensive. Baseball just feels more pure when the bats are wooden.
Not an expense issue, although it would add $100k to the budget. It's a "quality of good wood" issue. Long story, but the best wood is reserved for the pros starting with the Majors, then trickles down to to A ball. I can tell ya first hand, I did not get my first great bat until AA ball. Some of the stuff I had in A ball was more pulp than wood.

What's a good wood bat you say? You count the pulp lines on the bat. Anything under 15 is pretty good. I've seen some in the majors that had zero. Some with just 4-5. Less pulp, more wood, more solid, etc..

Hypothetically, is it easier to increase a wooden or metal bats performance?

Make it better.

Absolutely agree. Aluminum bats are the equivalent of installing turf instead of real grass---a synthetic money-saver. Nothing beats playing football, soccer and all outdoor sports on real grass, and the same is true of wooden bats and baseball--which is why they are still used by the pros. Going back to wooden bats would be one of the best things that collegiate baseball could do.

I coached from the time my oldest was 5 until he was a sophomore in HS and gave it up because of his elbow. The wood bat tournaments we had were a blast. He hit the longest ball he ever tagged with a wood bat.

I’d go as far as saying Mizzou is playing better than miss and vandy.

Man, I remember using wood bats in high school. Finding that sweet spot on a wood bat and most times you dont feel the ball hit the bat!

Agree with your question. Why use wooden bats when that is not what they play with. Bring the outfielders in. The only positive is that beautiful sound off a wooden bat. Oh yeah, dontforget to bring extra bats because you will see a few broken.
professional grade wood hits just as hard as a metal bat... sweet spot is just smaller. These kids have played summer ball and a lot of AAU tournaments do wood bat so it's not a crazy change.

Gary Sheffield had a crazy sound and I've never seen the ball jump off a bat like his did.

Loved using wood, the science going into wood bat making now and the wood quality is much better than what we had. These bats might as well be metal now.

You may be right but they still have Florida, Kentucky, A&M, Georgia, Arkansas, and LSU to play. The only team they surely should beat is Kentucky. All the other series are toss ups and the way everyone is playing I would only have Vanderbilt favored against UK and slightly over A&M.
