Worst hire in college football history

The worst coach at UT prior to Dooley was Bill Battle. He's now the AD at Alabama so there is hope he can still inflict damage at Bubba U.

It boggles the mind that the author of this article listed Joe Kuharich of Notre Dame (1959-62) but failed to mention the man who immediately preceded Bear Bryant at Alabama, Jennings B. Whitworth (1955-1957).

I don't think much research went into the list.

As bad as Dooley was, there's no way he's been the worst hire at a major program over the past 100+ years. He shouldn't even be in the top ten.

Yep, but this statement baffles me. "We are only listing coaches who were hired after a program reached national prominence. Thus, pre-Nick Saban coaches at LSU ... for example, were not considered."

LSU has a very strong tradition including a national championship in 1958. Makes no sense.

Yeah, that was incredibly stupid. Auburn and LSU were the most consistently best teams in the 1980s. Also, I guess Athlon's never heard the name Billy Cannon.

However, they sure got number one right. The Doofus is in a league all by himself.

I might have put Kiffin at the #1 or #2 spot for his failure at USC with the loaded teams he had. Just me, though.

I think it's more sad that UT hired not one but two coaches on that top 20 list.

Dooley was bad, but #1? He took over a team that was 12-13 the previous 2 years and went 15-21. Rich Rod took over a Michigan team that was 20-6 the previous 2 years and went 15-22. Rich Rod being #11 is a joke.

Croom and Orgeron should be listed - I would like to see one with just SEC hires --- John L Smith put the Arkansas program in the trash in just 1 season

Sportswriter does an article making fun of, or criticizing, big name programs like UT, Notre Dame, UF, Alabama, etc., to generate site traffic for ad revenue?

No way.

I really don't understand the "Kiffin/Fulmer left the place in really bad shape, and the guy after him is bad cause he wasn't given enough time to make it better" mindset that makes him the worst ever. That's just stupid. Not only was the actual program in dire straits so was the AD. Do people really have no ability to comprehend the difficulty of rebuilding a business??? Especially one that is as highly regulated as CFB. Remember how the AD was in debt?? Dealing with a team full of issues that kif and Fulmer left, and a new boss after the 1st year. How is a guy suppose to fill the cupboard when he is on the hot seat after the first year. Having to kick off top talent due to many issues. You think he wanted to kick players off like Jansen Jackson so that he would be in a worse position?? Especially after Kiffen left him with what..65 or so scholarship players?? Leaving him no depth and huge QB issues. Imagine if Bray had to compete with the likes of Bryce Petty or Taj Boyd. Yall think Bray would have been such a pos brat taking advantage of the fact that he couldn't be benched if he had to compete for the job???

I'm a smart successful guy and all, but it baffles me how stupid it is that people can't put it all together. Expecting that a complete program and AD rebuild could take less than 3 seasons. CBJ is just having to deal with minor program issues compared to Dooley. Many of yall need to go back and get a refresher on all the issues at UT when Dooley came on board and truly compare it to CBJ situation. Then u'll understand why CBJ is getting paid to get the job done now not "rebuild excuse" money. 3mil for WAY less stress and issues than Dooley's 1.8mil a year.(and no u can't add the buyout money to this comparison)

While it turned out not to be a good hire. no way its worse that Kurarich, Faust, Dubose, kiffhole. TN was already headed down by the time he came in

It was shameful because of the way many on here defended Dooley against all reason and logic and insulted anyone who actually used any critical standards to evaluate him.

It was shameful because many preferred to ignore and denigrate UT football history (I heard so many "well we can't expect to compete with the Florida and Alabamas anyway" or "no one else would possibly consider coaching us", etc. during Dooley's tenure) to prop up a coach they were inexplicably infatuated with (anyone else remember the guy who went off about how he hoped Dooley would come back with a new team and beat us?).

It was shameful because the general fan complacency surrounding the hire and the lack of standards for his first season (where people were happy enough that he almost won a couple of games that mattered), led to the AD awarding him a contract extension and a huge buyout that will hamper the budget for years to come.

this.
