Worst pr disaster in college sports history

how is this a pr disaster?

How is it not? You have a fanbase that is looking for some kind of good news. They have got Sh*t on by Kiffin. Then we got Doolied. The agent could just be making his client look good. Although from the comments I got the feeling UT wasn't ever even in play for Gruden. Looked like Hart made the call just to say he made it. Like he didn't make a real run at it. Here is the kicker. This coaching search is all on Hart. If he hires small hes screwed himself on this one.

It completely blows my mind that the people in charge, Dave Hart or whoever, could let the Gruden thing come to this! Whether UT was getting Gruden or not, SOMETHING/ANYTHING should have been said! The Gruden cliff note thread alone has almost 1.2 million hits! How can they not say anything?!

lol

If Hart had come out and said something, people would have said it was a smokescreen and the rumors would have gone to even greater levels. No win! Would you have him come out with a list of all coaches that he's not considering?!?!

I wanted Gruden as much as anyone. However I do realize its no ones fault. He never intended to come here. People need to realize that. If he had he would have. He used this to keep his name in the public eye to increase his value. It's se business law of supply and demand. I think Hart is a professional and UT will be in good shape when all is said. Unless he hires Golden or Smart in which case there should then be a riot and lynching. Just saying

Do all fan bases have drama queens like us?

worst in college football coaching search history, a strong argument could be made for that I think.

Nope. Before Miami hired Al Golden, Miami fans went through this exact same process -- down to reliable program insiders saying "the deal is done" -- WITH JOHN GRUDEN. It's hard to say it's the worst in coaching search history when the exact same thing, involving the exact same guy, happened less than two years ago.

here's my guess about what you will eventually hear.

gruden was contacted by hart to see if he was interested. told gruden he could work on the dollars, but wanted to know if he wanted the job or if this was a waste of time.

gruden then probably told him no. hart may have contacted him again on a couple of occasions to ask him if he was sure.

and that's it. all this other stuff is garbage.

the worst is the post that claimed gruden made unacceptable demands to hart like not being sure if he could follow ncaa rules.

this board and you the fans made this all up out of nothing more than gruden has ties to the tennessee area because of his wife and his time as a grad assistant.

this "pr disaster" hasn't even lasted two weeks.

not being able to hire someone who did not want the job is not a pr disaster.

it's more of a pr disaster that there are fans that want it so bad, they are crazy enough to make stuff up with the hopes that it will come true

This doesn't make our fan base look that bad. This is more wanting gruden than thinking we will actually hire him. I think it shows how loyal and passionate the fan base is. We are hungry to be up there with the best and want a coach to feel the same way.

If Dave Hart is expected to call a presser and address the situation everytime a rabid fanbase wants to run with a fabricated story he would never get anything done. The fact that fans wanted to believe "It's Done" and "Soon" from some storytellers in Gruden thread #1943 it's their own fault. Dave Hart had nothing to do with that.

Dave Hart absolutely cannot call a press conference in each situation you reference above. However, many times the situation "gets away from you" if you will in things as public as this. A recent example would be President Obama's endorsement of gay marriage. In no way shape or form do I believe he intended to do that as quickly as he did--too many culturally red states like Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia were in play. He was forced to move in that direction by the fuel that is Joe Biden, speaking freely on Meet the Press. Joe Biden was an agent of the President and it forced his hand.

Similarly, in this situation, we clearly have a person or people who are feeding various individuals in the media with information that each of them has deemed credible (ex. Chattanooga v. Knoxville media). Each in essence are acting in the same way as Joe Biden--agents of the university because they are "players, soon to be coaches, boosters, athletic department officials, etc.)
The two examples diverge in how President Obama handled his predicament.

Obama knew his base was heavily in favor of it, any equivocating or non-answers would infuriate them--he knew that, so he immediately cut losses and endorsed same sex marriage consequences be damned.

In our example, the combination of no information in the form of leaks from sources around the University, the hunger of this fan base, and too many contradictory Gruden stories coming from the media (i.e. Chattanooga) and you've created a wildfire of speculation and anticipation. It has steadily been growing all week reaching the crescendo it did today, because Dave Hart, the central figure of this search, did not bothered to put it out.

I'm on twitter like many of you. I follow many of the national and regional sportswriters. Our drama has been the punch line all afternoon. We look like a joke. As an alum I am embarrassed by the donors would couldn't keep their mouth shut and the Athletic Department that refused to acknowledge reality and forthcoming PR mess they are partially responsible for.

How is it really PR if no one really acknowledged this as a legitimate shot outside of our very proactive fan base? The national media never put this in serious discussion. You know what the first thing that was on ESPN last night? Spurs benching their starters. As far as we know, nothing happened and this was a figure of our imagination. We made this out to be more than it was. Was there a chance, perhaps discussions with Gruden, yeah. Did it work out, no. Hart might have messed up, we don't know. Reactions like these don't make the problem go away. Move on, find a different coach. Our fans wanted Gruden more than he wanted us.
