Worst President's First 100 Days in History

Trump said he wanted to adjourn Congress so he could install his people as federal judges. That was unconstitutional, too. But he never acted on it, just like Lincoln never had Taney arrested. Saying and doing are two very different things.

Bust Lincoln DID have federal judges and congressmen arrested. Get back to me when Trump does something to that level.

Lol this thread is awesome. We’re a nation of traitors founded by rebelling against a dictator and corrupt government. And less than a hundred years later were virtue signaling to support a dictator and corrupt government that killed almost a million of its citizens 😂

Lincoln didn’t care for any life. In fact he sacrificed about 800k lives to preserve his “legacy” as he did not want to be remembered as the President that broke up the nation. That is all that the Civil War was about.
lol.........What president would want to be remembered as "the President who broke up the nation"?
So the Civil War was about keeping the nation from breaking up? We've supported wars with much less on the line.
And there was that little underlying issue of slavery.

He led maniacal chants of "lock her up" about a former First Lady, Senator, Secretary of State, and presidential candidate.

Had nothing to do with the Civil War breaking out. Lincoln played that card to get re-elected. Go research the draft history of the 13th ammendment. Buchanan has already created a draft which was largely agreed to and Lincoln stated he was agreeable to that did nothing to free the slaves. Lincoln played that card to his Republican base to get re-elected.

Here ya go Luth. The more you know...

The other 13th Amendment

Actually, slavery did have a bit to do with the Civil War breaking out. Maintaining the careful balance of "slave states" versus "free states" and the resulting balance of power in Congress was a huge concern that, in fact, helped push the country into war.

Now...if you're arguing Lincoln wasn't always an abolitionist, then you're onto something.

You’re referring to the three fifths compromise? If so I agree with you.

When another POTUS is has states seceding from the union, starts a war that kills over 600 thousand Americans and suspends civil rights I might reconsider my opinion.

It takes two to tango. The South had every opportunity to back down and *not* secede and, yes oh btw, the South *started* the war.

Most importantly, was the decision by Lincoln to ensure the continuance of the Union a good decision or bad one in hindsight?

The answer, obviously, is yes. Preserving the Union was key to our country's emergence as a world power and, later, leader of the free world economically and ideologically for generations.

Anyone with an ounce of common sense would recognize this reality and accept it as fact.

SOOooooooo... all of your anti-Lincoln rants really come off just as that... the lamentations of a sour-grapes Confederate who lost the "War of Northern Aggression". Maybe next time!

I am thankful the union was restored but that's like saying I'm thankful my house burned down so I could get a new kitchen. Lincoln had options and he refused to consider them, he wanted war because he thought it would be quick, easy, cheap and put in power for life.

I am confused on what options you honestly think there were other than "Just let 'em do their thing I guess". The South was already clearly taking a threatening posture and making moves on federal property before Lincoln even made the call for volunteers.

I don’t think that’s common sense at all and quite the contrary. Latest estimates have the death toll around 800000 out of a population at the time of about 30 million. The Western powers all eliminated slavery without a bloody war except the U.S. and Haiti.

Capitulated to what? If had left the states that seceded alone and negotiated with them there wouldn't have been a war and I firmly believe they would have rejoined the union.

Before or after South Carolina attacked Fort Sumpter?

Lincoln: "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that."
