Would Smart go to the Falcons?

The real question as far as I'm concerned is when does Georgia turn on him?

The Dawgs think they should be NC every year now. How many years does Kirby go not winning one until they think they can find someone better?

Face it, you have to have a little bit of luck to win a NC in terms of injuries. Bowers and McConkey being dinged in the championship game killed them. Can't expect to have all your playmakers healthy at the end of each season like Georgia did in 21 and 22. Truth be told, I'm not even sure they beat Bama for the 21 championship unless all the Tide receivers were hurt.
Look no further than Clemson and Dabo. He's nowhere near any kind of a hot seat, but they started chirping loudly this season. It would take a similar situation at UGA for them to start chirping at Kirby like that. Going multiple years without making the playoff.

I'm not sure his heavy handed approach to coaching, ala Sabanesque, would translate to the NFL very well.

If UGA didn’t make the 12 team CFP for 2 years straight, Kirby’s seat would be on fire.

I didn't even consider expansion. Good point. It will be interesting to see what fans of big programs consider to be acceptable in terms the expanded CFP. It likely won't be good enough just to make it. Not in the same way as the NCAAT since that tournament is so much bigger, but there will be an expectation not just to make it but to win at least one game, especially if you're a high seed.

We always think “he’d be crazy to do it” but we don’t think like these guys. They’re super competitive people always needing a challenge.

Kirby is 48. He’s won 2 national titles and 2 SEC titles. He’s coached at Georgia 8 years already. Yes, it’s is Alma mater. But it’s a changing landscape, where college coaches use to get 3 months off now are working 24/7. The money is great. He probably won’t leave for a couple more years. But he gets another natty, a couple more SEC titles? I could see him trying it.

Also, I think Kirby could work out. He’s an excellent defensive mind. He’s probably have to be a little more laid back, but no doubt he could compete with the top NFL defensive minds

The logic behind it wouldn't make any sense, but since I am a Vols fan, he should definitely go for it.

** BREAKING ** Sources close to the situation in Athens feel Georgia Bulldogs Head Coach Kirby Smart WILL listen to an offer from Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank in the next few days. Earlier today the Falcons fired Head Coach Arthur Smith after 3 seasons. It is believed that the new world of college football with NIL deals and the transfer portal make the NFL more appealing to coach Smart than ever before. The current broken structure of college football forces coaches to perpetually recruit high school players, possible transfers, and their own current players year round. Smart who played at Georgia, has won two national championships as the Bulldogs Head Coach. The Falcons are in position to offer Smart almost double his current contract! Smart ranks 3rd of all college coaches making just over $10 million annually. The top group of coaches in the NFL are making roughly $20 million annually. Another factor in the decision is the pressure of playing in the SEC. Essentially every week in college football is a must win situation for national contenders. NFL teams can have a successful year and playoff run with a 9-8 record. Stay tuned for updates as this is a fluid situation.

This is probably from a Richard G. West want-a-be.

Guess who is the early favorite for natty next year? No way....jawga...yep..he's in the best place as long as health and nil doesn't go haywire. Also players stay off police blotters.

Smart could coach in the NFL but Atl is a disaster roster wise. He’d be a fool to take that job.

Good to see Blank still has learned nothing from the Bobby Petrino embarrasment.

Is Kirby actually a "great defensive mind," or has he just always had a ton of talent? I'm not insulting him - Lord knows he's great at acquiring and developing the talent. But his UGA teams don't do anything special scheme-wise on either side of the ball. UGA isn't a great team because their scheme is so dynamic or creative. They just have way more talent and depth than almost everybody they play, and his players execute well.

If you look at great NFL teams, there's usually something creative or different that they're doing that people haven't adapted to yet. That ain't Kirby.

I think the qualities that make a good NFL coach is personal and game management more than actual Xs and Os.

His defense in 2021 allowed 10 ppg in today’s college football. That’s not just roll it out with 5* talent. He of course has dudes and I’m not denying that, but it seems obvious to me Georgia is always excellent in scheme and fundamentals.

Saban is hailed as a defensive mastermind and Georgia’s defense has consistently been better than Bama’s the last half decade. And Saban has a bunch of 5* dudes as well.

Oh no doubt - they are excellent in the execution of their scheme and fundamentals. My point is that the scheme itself isn't anything dynamic, unique, or special. They do very conventional things and do them well. My impression is that doesn't necessarily lead to a lot of NFL success. His defense is one of the few in CFB today that play man most of the time, and it's because he's got the athletes to do so. Every other defensive coach would do that too if they had his players. That's a credit to his recruiting and development, not his ability to scheme up.

The NFL is way more about out-scheming/outsmarting an opposing coaching staff because they've all got super talented players who are good at executing whatever it is they do. CFB is a sales and development position; the NFL is more a position of technical expertise.

Yeah, but I'd rather have that problem than a great QB but holes everywhere else.
You can build a team with free agents, drafts etc around a franchise QB but only 10 or so QBs are elite. Most of the teams with those are ones with a chance to win a SB.

I heard a former NFL coach answer after being asked "why would you take if you had the first pick, Lawrence Taylor or Peyton Manning?" He was a DC before a head coach and replied "I have seen the light, give me Manning, you cant win without a top QB".
