Would you be happy with this staff?

Cincy had a decent defense - insert SEC players makes it better. Do you want to feel all proud of some name put on staff or do you want Jones to pick who he can work with and fits his ideas on coaching and recruiting? What if you feel better about a name assistant but we win fewer games because they're hired? Who do you think is a better judge of all this - the guy who does nothing but football and gets 3 million to do it or us? Let the man work.

Agreed. CBJ obviously has a system that he wants to install here, a system with a proven track record.

That system doesn't do us any good if we hire a big name DC who doesn't work with the system.

Cincy has had a Top 20 defense for straight years. Lets go with it for now.

Thanks for the reply.

I agree I would be disappointed if this is the staff. He has several million I'm sure to hire these guys so get the best and don't settle! He will only be as good as the staff.

:good!:

I will say this about the people supposedly coming:

Stripling has a ton of Big Ten experience: 13 seasons at Indiana, 3 at Minnesota, 2 at Louisville, 3 at Michigan State, 2 at Michigan. He coached two (2-3 round) picks last year and Girodano should be drafted this year. Walter Stewart would've been drafted had he not suffered a career-ending injury.

Jancek coached LB at UGA for 4 (?) seasons and has been co-/defensive coordinator at UGA and UC. I would assume he's on his way to Knoxville since he's no longer listed as a coach on the UC website.

Bajakian has some good experience, but he's a young coach. Butch really trusts him though, and I think the way they work together is crucial on offense. They changed QB's and philosophies mid-season and didn't miss a beat.

Elder is a really young coach who was a GA at Michigan before coaching LB's at CMU, TE's in 2010, RB's in 2011, and safeties this year.

Mahoney spent 7 years at Tulane before spending the last 6 with Butch at CMU and UC.

Weist was at Western Kentucky where he was OC for 3 years and Asst. Head Coach, before joining Butch at UC.

I'm surprised he's not bringing Dave Johnson, he coached tight ends for 7 seasons at UGA, and O-Line at West Virginia for 2 before joining Butch.

Elder, Mahoney, and Weist aren't that appealing to me. The rest are okay.

If we got a big name DC and Tee was WR coach then yes. If Tee doesn't come and he brings another Cincy coach then no. Staff would be in the bottom half of the SEC.

If I can get Randy shannon as my DC before FSU Inks him thats who im calling for this posistion and kind of go from there.

If Tee comes it is strictly for recruiting purposes. He's not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to actual coaching.

Bringing in a group of Big East nobodies is a better plan.

Total group of nobodies. Very weak recruiting abilities. Only other staff in the SEC that I'd be comfortable saying this group is better than would be Kentucky and that is probably a toss up. Big East and MAC nobodies plus Georgia retreads equals cellar dwellers in the SEC for the foreseeable future.

I have been high on Jones this whole time, but if the staff is what Hubbs posted then that scares me. Just don't see them being able to recruit at this level.

+1. I don't understand how in the world a coach in need of a top tier DC is overlooking Shannon. The guy's feats as a DC is what got him hired as the HC at Miami in the first place.

He's a LB coach for TCU right now (another good defense), and that just begs "Come and get me!" to a new coach like Jones. The guy is an ace recruiter, able to give you a pipeline into south Florida. What's not to like?

Agreed. I understand his OC coming. Makes sense. But on the D-side of the ball, I'm sorry but he is fighting an uphill battle if he is not hiring more accomplished and well-known assistant coaches.

When a 5* DT, LB or DB hears his mom say "Randy Shannon is on the line, from the University of Tennessee," he knows who that is and he is already halfway sold.

Conversely, when they hear "Coach Whotheheckosky is on the line" he's more prone to tell her to take a message.

I totally agree with you but if he wants to go Martinez and Jancek thats fine, I do believe that Richt was given a ultimatium by the powers that be though with those a few years back when UGA let them go I think it was find a new dc or you want be here much longer so i guess we shall see. Just kind of seems like getting the band back together from the old Georgia defensive coaches but lets see what happens.

Appears to be much better than the two groups of coaches Dooley had. Results should also be better.

Need Tee Martin and Dale Jones (former Vol LB at Appy State). Dale has coached DL & LB and is DC. Orange bloods for sure.

While I agree that a "big name" may help in recruiting, it is not an absolute. Attitude goes along way. There are no big names on Vandys staff and look what theyve been able to do. Not that I want us to be anything like Vandy but anything they can do we can do better. Butch has been winning with the people he has, they are familiar with each other, he would be an idiot to split up his staff just because some of you dont know there names. My point is....the name "UT" gets you in the front door. The sales job is then up to the individual, regardless of how popular they are.
