That was actual facts. You're side of the argument, however, has yet to quote anything but a pathetic attempt to bash something you haven't experienced. Sure there are people to fit the negative stereotype, but there is a lot of philanthropic work done behind the scenes that no one cares to recognize when they bash Greek organizations.

One of them, for example, was providing a safe "haunted house" for disabled kids full of candy, toys and prizes here in North Florida during Halloween. That is one of many. We worked the building, the event itself and the take down.

We've raised 40k per year for St Judes as well.

Were there some entitled pricks along the way? Sure. You see that with surfers, athletes, theater and all kinds of groups. It isn't just the Greek organizations that house those types. Being Greek isn't for everyone and it isn't expected to be. Bashing it because it is not for you is just as snobby as the stereotypes you are mocking.

Only Greeks do this stuff folks.

True story

No they dont but it provided an organized foundation to get it done. Sometimes it was done inefficiently. Like I said, it is not for everyone and thats fine. But you're bashing a group of people as if they are worthless pricks that pay for friends. It is just as immature and snobby as the stereotype you are mocking.

I never said they were worthless. I did say they paid for friends.

Paying for dues in a fraternity is just like paying dues to participate in any other activities. It costs money to keep organizations running.

If you consider that buying friends, then I guess I made a pretty good investment. I graduated college 15 years ago and still talk to my fraternity brothers on a daily basis and they are still my closest friends today.

That is great I'm happy for you.

I bought a ring 3 yrs ago and my wife is still with me. Dang it.

This debate never disappoints.

Agree that Greek organizations get more press for hazing, sexual assault and nonsense like the SAEs in Oklahoma rather than their charitable work.

Also agree there's an elitist aura with some (not all) Greek organizations that turn off non-Greek students, deserved or undeserved.

My father pledged Kappa Alpha Psi at Florida A&M back in the 1950s, and I was all set to continue that legacy in Gainesville...until IBM came calling with a student rep job the beginning of my sophomore year.

The guys who would have been pledge brothers remain some of my closest friends to this day, even though I never pledged.

So you gotta have money to make money?

Yes, it really helps.

I wasn't in a Frat in college, never had the time for it working full time and being a member of the U.S. Army Reserve took a lot of my time while attending classes full time.

I knew many Frat guys, they were like most everyone else, some were cool, some were not.

When these Frat guys make videos and post them online with their racist comments and actions, it hurts everyone even if you aren't in a Fraternity.

Not sure what a major college football team whose starters are mostly African-Americans has to do with some dumb drunk redneck frat boys chanting racial slurs on a bus.

I'm sure there's plenty of football players on OU's campus who'd like to whoops some SAE frat boy ass.

As my dad once told me 'you cant be a true sports fan if you are a racisit'

Ha. Please share the statistical research you have that backs that up.

I've interviewed/hired/fired well over a hundred people in my life. Statistically speaking, the majority of the underperforming, lazy dumbasses came from the fraternity mold.

For instance, I'm in a staff meeting as we speak. One of the other managers delegated their attendance to one of their group. He's a frat guy. He's setting here leaned back in the chair like it is a ****ing lazy boy, and was 10 minutes late for the meeting. When he entered the room he says "oh my bad."

Not coincidentally, he's on 90 day probation for bad performance.

I do believe it is a generational thing, and that sometimes the frat life makes it worse. this generation is already hopeless.

The video is horrific and makes me incredibly sad. Racism is alive and well.

I live with two SAE members and they are very nice. Most fraternity members I know are good people. The worst fraternity members go to the University of Alabama. All of these things tie together somehow.

I will say, the fraternities like my father was in during the late 60s/early 70s are a lot different now that more and more 'legacy' members show up.

Not always, but I've heard guys mention it.

I'm currently a senior fraternity member at UT, and I can easily see both sides of the discussion. Do we have members who are lazy, apathetic, and overall lowlifes? Of course, but you can encounter those types anywhere, not just fraternities. We also have a solid group of guys who are ambitious and work their tails off to gain as much as they can in our short time here. The amount of friendly academic competition we have with one another has pushed us to excel more than any other factor.

Regardless, this thread has drifted from the initial topic. What the OU SAE's did was despicable, and there is no excuse for their actions. Please do not think, however, that this is an accurate representation of Greek life today.
