As for Tennessee’s other top target at the event, 5-star offensive tackle Darnell Wright had an up-and-down first day. The 6-foot-6, 325-pound tackle looked a lot like a kid who hadn’t played a game in two months. He was a bit rusty and not in great shape. He also was asked to play a new position — lining up solely at left guard and right tackle Saturday. Wright is a on a stacked squad, with OTs Wanya Morris and Evan Neal also on Team Flash. Wright told Volquest after practice that the only other time he’d ever lined up at guard was at The Opening. Wright got better as practice went on, but he struggled some early, especially in 1-on-1 drills vs. DL. The coaches were really harping on his hands, telling him to be more aggressive. When it clicked for Wright, he was an unmovable block. He had two pancake blocks during consecutive impressive reps. He also flashed his athleticism during some of the zone-run work. Overall, it wasn’t Wright’s best day, and he admitted that, but the 5-star should continue to improve as the week goes on.
