Do you guys think that Martin uses Kentucky's greatness to his advantage in recruiting? Maybe some kids are receptive to the pitch of being a big UK rival and playing them every season?

Id rather sale the program for what WE are, rather than anything to do with UK. if they care about kentucky or playing against UK then they can go to Louisville

Going into the season, Tennessee was predicted to finish second to last in the SEC. Tennessee finished second. The basketball team also improved considerably throughout the season, unlike the football team.

Martin is much better than Dooley.

We've had this debate before. It's very much apples to oranges. In basketball, one elite recruit (e.g. Jarnell Stokes) can have a massive effect just 2 months into his college career. Good luck turning things around in football with 1 stellar recruit 2 months into his first college football season.

That said. The jury is out on both Martin and Dooley. We'll know a lot about both of them after this coming season. Turning around a football team is like turning around an barge. Turning around a basketball team is like turning a ski boat.

I'm pleased because it appears that he is analyzes the game enough to learn from his mistakes. Once you are a confident enough coach to get out of your comfort zone, the sky is the limit. The game and players change. The coach better be a step ahead, or be left behind.

Hell yeah. You do know his best player last year couldn't get minutes past Steven Pearl in 2010-2011, right?

That happens in college basketball all the time.....Maymon showed skill under pearl....he was just a TO waiting to happen...The game slowed down for him last yr and he played under control...I'm hoping this is the yr the same happens for McRae...if it is watch out.

Martin was handed a five star stud in the middle of the season....Dooley lost his two best players in the middle of the season...That said I like both coaches....This is the first yr we will know what we really have in Dooley and in two seasons we will know more about coach Martin.

Martin came in, gained the full trust of Pearl's holdovers and had success with them. Dooley regressed his second year and only now is it looking like he may be able to have a decent level of success here. I have much more confidence in CCM than CDD.

My opinion is right now it looks good, but there's definitely more to see. He no doubt exceeded expectations and led this team to a much better year than most anyone expected. However, it was one year, and there are ALOT of coaches who have been one year wonders.

I like where the program seems to be headed, but as I said before anointing him a great hire and saying we're a national contender I need a bit of a bigger sample size.

At this point I say it's a good hire, and that I feel good about where the program is headed and who's hands it's in. This is a big year, a top 20 class, make the NCAA and win a game, and the hire looks even better. There are still definite questions IMO, that's all, but that's what makes this upcoming season so exciting.

Martin came in after our most successful basketball coach since Ray Mears with none of the players that fit his style and was able to get them to buy into what he was selling in eight months, while Dooley couldn't do it in 22 months.

End of discussion.

Love how this thread went from "how did Martin do?" to "compare Dooley and Martin."

Can't be end of discussion when we didn't make the tournament. This season should be great.....recruiting is really the only concern I have about Martin.....I hope players start committing soon.

This, seems it always ends up at that, why?

Should we throw Serrano into the convo too?

I don't understand it either. I read the football and recruiting boards but I try very hard to not let my interest in one overflow to the other. I think Martin did a wonderful job last year once all things are taken into consideration. My feelings for or against the coach of another sport don't have any influence on that analysis.

Plus, trolls and negavols can sense any reference to football (and especially CDD) anywhere on VN and are drawn to it like sharks to blood. Best to just not tempt them.

I didn't either, but you know how it is. I try my best not to compare Dooley/Martin because it's different, but then I get mad because people have downplayed Martin's job.

Some people will just never be happy or enjoy being argumentative. Last I looked, 85%+ of the vote was good or great. That's about as close to consensus as you can get, especially talking sports.

Why would it make you mad? the ones that talk in real bad extremes are just trying to get a reaction from you....I honestly thought we would be a NIT team last yr....I do,however, think he did a good job and the future appears bright. Right now though he still gets an incomplete and has a lot to prove.

I was satisfied with last seasons results, but have to admit I was getting a little concerned when we lost to AP at home.
I think we will but if we don't get back to the Sweet 16 this year, those concerns will resurface.
Pulling in Stokes was the biggest plus of Cuonzo's first season and should have the largest effect on the near future as far as recruiting possibilities.
I'm expecting a great season.
Please don't let me down ,Zo.

Volnation is the epitome of black or white train of thought. Everyone's either an un-merited God-like figure or undeservingly a piece of crap with the AIDS.

It's obviously more difficult to get 7 or 8 basketball players to focus rather than 80 guys recruited by 3 different coaches.
Brilliant comparison.

It's not more difficult but it's still telling Martin got his players to buy in within eight months while Dooley...well we aren't sure yet.

Dooley competed against SEC football while Martin was going against SEC basketball....that is a big difference right there.......Martin made the NIT.....not exactly the final four....that being said I think both programs show a lot of promise this season but the basketvols was hardly mission accomplished so far.

Martin's team exceeded expectations while Dooley has spent most of his time embarrassing himself. That's the big difference.
