That is how a real championship process should work - you have to win a championship to play for the next one. Yes, the method at times would end up with the team that had more losses winning - but if you can't win your conference championship game, you really should not be playing for a championship at the next level.

That is not the point - the point is that if you have conferences at all, then there should first be a conference champion and then those champions play for the next level of championship.

If a conference championship is not important - just disband the conferences and make all the teams be independent and let a "poll' or "opinion" at the end of the season decide who the best 12 are.

And if you don't want to play the game to decide the champion then give an automatic bid to the two teams that would have played in the championship. The season has to matter.

That’s at best a utopian view of sports. But it’ll never happen in reality. Seasons do matter in relation to seeding. Teams with better season records or conference championships get byes into later playoff rounds. Or teams get rewarded with more home games. But seasons do matter.
