Took me years to develop my Top 5. They are as follows:
1. Cinderella Man
2. Gangs of New York
3. The Departed
4. The Shawshank Redemption
5. Warrior (Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton, possibly the most underrated movie of all time)
The Great Escape is so good. Very few movies stand the test of time from that era.
Not sure how big of a window you consider to be "that era" but I feel like there is a pretty good list of films from that mid 60's to mid 70's time frame that hold up extremely well.
Actually leads into my contribution to the thread to go along with plenty that have already been mentioned, one of my all time favorite movies is The Sting.
Inspired by the movie thread. Is there a movie, or movies that you'd rate a 10/10? Not by critics, just your personal opinion that is tops. I have two that I love that I can watch any time and enjoy as much as the first time I watched them.
Tombstone
Last of the Mohicans
The Warrior is just about a 10 for me.
I have Warrior and watch it occasionally. I agree, the story and acting are great.
Warrior kicks ass. One of the best movies I've ever seen. Tom Hardy was such a monster in the octagon.
It's really a shame that it essentially gets dismissed as an MMA movie. It's a very powerful story with extremely deep-rooted characters.
I really wish it got the recognition it deserved, but unfortunately I think it will always be regarded as "That movie about the MMA fighters"
