Your Memphis Grizzlies Basketball Thread III

When I was a kid my favorite player was Gary Payton. I tried extremely hard not to be a OKC fan, but I got to see Durant live in Thompson Boling, and he was drafted by Seattle. That's pretty much it. May be weak, but whatever. I'm not judging you guys.

This dude gets it. GP was the man.

How did ya'll become grizzly fans, anyhow? I know its not the connection to Vancouver, obviously.

I've always been under the assumption that UofT fans considered Memphis to be de facto Mississippi.

Is it just because the team is in state, or is it something more?

Believe me, I'm not trying to offend. I understand Memphis has a legendary street ball history, and all that..but who are you guys, and why do you root for the grizz?

Live here. I was always a casual fan of the NBA but more for players (Jordan, specifically) than teams.

Then Shaq and Penny came along and I was a Magic fan. After they split-up, I was a Kings fan for about 10 minutes and then Memphis finally managed to get it's own team for me to root for.

I think the "disconnect" talked about in this thread is pretty interesting. I consider myself proud to live in Tennessee, but there is very large disconnect between East TN and Memphis.

I think, first of all, it's the culture. East TN is very "backwoods" and Memphis is visibly more urban. I don't think I, myself, fit this mold but I think it's real.

Secondly, Memphis is ust so far away - and it's not exactly a travel destination. The drives to Atlanta and Nashville are much easier for someone in East TN wanting to visit a "big city".

I have lived in Memphis my whole life. Was just a casual fan before the Grizzlies came here. Now full-blown Grizzoholic.

The only teams outside of TN I pull for are the Yankees and Redskins. Yanks because I grew up in NY. The Redskins because I was already a well established fan long before the Titans came to Nashville(I've tried not liking the Redskins, trust me lol). I still pull for the Titans as long as they aren't playing the Skins.

I remember when Shuler came to Neyland with the Skins for a preseason game. I can't remember if Bobby Denton was on the PA or not, but it seemed like it. Whoever it was, though announced Shuler as 'old number 21'. It was a pretty good publicity idea by the Skins. We all thought he was gonna be amazing for Washington back then

We all did. Funny that the QB taken 6 rounds later, Gus Ferrotte, ended up having the better career.

Cause some of us live in Memphis and the rest recognize a fun team dipstick.

I was born in Oak Ridge. Live near Philly now. I really miss East Tennessee. I've been to Memphis, but never did more than pass through, really. I've got a friend from Chicago, he said his brother lived in Memphis for awhile, and he said he loved the damn place.

There's definitely a huge disconnect between Knoxville and Memphis, and I'm not sure if there should be.

Well, Knoxville and Memphis are different. There is a culture here around BBQ and the Blues. Walk down Beale St. on a Friday night, carrying an open beer in the wide open, walk in Schwabs and do a little shopping amongst the mountains of stuff, hit Rum Boogie Cafe or Silky Sullivans for another beer and then walk down to the New Daisy, where Richard Johnston is jamming outside with his boots as tip jars as he plays the low-bow hill harp. Look him up on utube and look for Dancing on Beale to get a solid taste of it. A block away is the Fedex Forum, which is one of the best basketball venues you can go to. Catch a game and sneak to the concierge, if you don't have the right kind of ticket, through the gift shop. Then compare the two cities.
