And yet we had a 13 point lead on them in the first half. “Next step” would be a doozy if the first one has us looking better than them in 6/8 quarters…all with recruits signed under uncertainty about future sanctions. In his prime he was, and we've got to get back to that level. Not saying we won't/can't I'm just saying we won't take the next step if we don't. JH has fixed a lot of problems and he has certainly elevated recruiting, he just hasn't hit that next level yet.
To put an exclamation point on it, last year Saban signed nine 5* players. This is roughly the same number the Vols have signed the last 20 years.
A good coach can pull that off from time to time and JH is a good coach. I wouldn't try to bank on consistently out-coaching Saban with less talent though. And yet we had a 13 point lead on them in the first half. “Next step” would be a doozy if the first one has us looking better than them in 6/8 quarters…all with recruits signed under uncertainty about future sanctions.
It’s an opinion on HOW MUCH “less” tho. Bama lands all this 5 star talent yet goes to the portal for dudes the service virgin nerds didn’t regard so highly an awful lot. Pearce, Beasley and Carter/Telander are as good as anything coronated by Saban the last few classes. Now the cuffs are off…and Heupel’s still a better technician.A good coach can pull that off from time to time and JH is a good coach. We'll see. All things considered, I'd be pretty happy going into a Bama or Georgia game knowing we had a talent/depth advantage. Not having that against them hasn't worked out well for most SEC coaches. Yes we've added and coached up some great players but look at the depth difference. How miserable did our line look with just one guy missing (Mays). It’s an opinion on HOW MUCH “less” tho. You take an experienced center off any OL and how great is the line? Lot of responsibility to learn under fire. We'll see. Gotcha. Hey I sincerely hope you're right and I'm wrong and JH can start consistently beating Kirby and Saban with lower ranked recruiting classes. I haven't seen it done yet but if JH does it he'll go down as a legendary talent developer/coach.You don’t. Lane was always on scholarship.
Truth could be closer to the middle. Recruiting bumped up by the NCAA situation resolved, yet not adherence to what service nerds coronate as the best talent. Coud more see them following their methodology of rubber stamping whomever Saban pursues. Worked for Clemson with a little success. Heupel suddenly, miraculously "recruits better" yet remains recruiting his type of players.Gotcha. I agree that you don't have to necessarily have the best class "on paper" if Bama signs the best rated class in the SEC and we sign the 2-3rd best....that's a wash. There are always players that aren't evaluated correctly, even in the NFL. But if Bama signs the best class 3 years in a row and we sign the 6-7th rated class three years in a row ...that's gets hard to overcome.Truth could be closer to the middle.
