Ohio State because they lost all those starters on defense, and Notre Dame because they have no defense and Brady Quinn is overrated.

There isn't really any stellar team this year, which makes the national title wide open.

brady quinn is the best returning qb coming back this year and the defense is much better.

i wonder if that would be the sentiment if we went 8-4 this year?
We didn't. That's the bottom line. You are what your record says you are.

i know, and i agree. but let's say we had finished 8-4 just for giggles. i don't know that i or anyone else would be saying "at least we didn't go 5-6". 8-4 last year would have been disappointing just the same. the only difference would have been that we had another winning season, another bowl game, a ho hum season at UT. but nothing to get excited about, and still viewed as underacheiving.

granted, 8-4 sounds much better than 5-6, but you get the idea....

If UT had gone 8-4 last year, I would not be near as vehement in my criticism of the head coach.

no, and i doubt anyone would be as upset in general. but as it has been discussed in exhaustive lengths plenty of times before, 8-4 isn't anything to get excited about either, and would still warrant, in many views, plenty of criticism.

but you're right, probably not on the level it has been this off season.
