Can't really say 2014 was a great recruiting class. We have lost too many off that class that were 4 star players. So, either Butch missed on talent evaluation or too many kids don't like what Butch is cooking. Either way, the defections are making Jones look bad and will set the program back for another year. Face it folks, Jones is spinning his wheels.

Or too many kids have the entitlement mentality.

Ok...excuse me another 4 star committed. :gone:

Replacing a 4 star with a younger 4 star does not make sense. You are back in the same boat as last year. Too many freshman getting playing time was the excuse for losing last year and will be the excuse for this year.

Or these kids thought they would beat out Hurd, Barnett, Kelly for playing time. They can't carry their jock straps. Jones doesn't look bad to me. The kids who don't compete look bad. Jones will reel in another class full of kids who what to compete and play. Some will leave when they see the writing on the wall. Happens every year. We can't change it and it is what it is. Go Vols!!

What is Butch supposed to do?

He could:

(a) Hold hands with all the players, never raise his voice or voice expectations, tell everyone they are NFL-ready, and not risk ruffling any feathers

(b) Play the person most likely to be soft and want to leave if they're not a starter, instead of the best player.

(c) Stop recruiting talented players so that existing players aren't afraid they've been recruited over.

(d) All of the above.

(e) What he's been doing.

Not true. Butch isn't keeping dead weight. Keeping somebody who will never make an impact isn't effective.

Must do a better job evaluating talent and managing players. What other program in the nation has mass defections from freshmen who do not start ? Helm and Hendrix played quite a bit and still wanted out. Jones needs to be a better manager of his players, that much is obvious.

It's obvious that you're wrong as well as an indisputable fact.

Tell that to Missouri. They never are high in recruiting rankings but have won the SEC East 2 years in a row. They do it by DEVELOPING players. They win games by having more mature players who have been in the system for 3-4 years.

Not sure they were all freshmen, but Saban faced a similar exodus at Bama in 2011. He faced similar criticism. I think Bama weathered the storm. We will too. Please stop being so melodramatic.

And again, not freshmen, but this year Bama lost a QB and two Rbs, all highly ranked recruits. Not sure how many more they lost this year.

And I'm not sure what difference the 'freshmen' part makes anyway. Is it somehow more indicting to lose young kids, just adjusting to college, at a time when they think they still have their entire playing career ahead of them somewhere else? Is it less indicting to lose kids at just the time when they actually realize they're no longer the big fish in the small pond, and get scared of the other big fish swimming around the big pond?

I promise. We'll be fine. I'd rather have this problem than a bunch of average players that didn't get any better because they had no competition for playing time.

They still get steam rolled by elite talent. See: Auburn 2013, UGA and Alabama 2014.

So Butch should recruit 2 and low rated 3 stars because they will probably stay ?

I say roll the dice and go after the big dogs. Enough of them will stay

LSU, Auburn, Florida, Texas, etc at some point have had pretty huge attrition rates. You're actually more likely to have a higher percentage of attrition with bigger classes. You can correlate that with the class sizes over the years if you like. Some of those schools had National Title runs over the period of time where they had that attrition as well. Looking at the amount of freshmen starting, contributing, and the amount of success on and off the field, I would say Jones has done a pretty good job managing his players.

And they kept every single player from that class four years ago?

Pinkle has been there like 15 years. More than Butch no doubt. He has an established system. Butch needs that chance if you want to compare. Pinkle was 4-7 and 5-7 his first two years.

Just hang on to the 4 star recruits and give them time to develop. Imagine how good Helm and Hendrix would be down the road if they had stayed. Just because a guy does not play as a freshman doesn't mean he can't contribute later in his career.

Well, it's not as if this doesn't happen at every school, every year. It's part of changing a culture. You don't beg kids who didn't earn playing time to stay just because they were rated high coming out of high school. You just go recruit new guys to come in and hope they pan out better than the ones they are replacing.

Go look at our SEC mates and tell me how many FR they lost/are losing to attrition. Not JR/SR who have had an opportunity to contribute but never have. Since its so commmon you shouldn't have a problem showing that everyone has lost this many young players and not due to disciplinarian reasons.

You're preaching to the choir. Tell that to the kids who are transferring. They're the ones deciding to leave. No one here is running them off, and there's no indication the staff is.

It looks like they want to go somewhere where either (a) there is less competition, (b) the coaches coddle them, or (c) both.

Just go ahead and give up...we already have on you. :cray:
