Put up or Shut up time

Nobody wants to hear this, but I agree with this part:

"Point is, this is the game that all those sayings and mantras that even Jones's own players have sometimes labeled "corny" or "cheesy" become viewed by the Big Orange Nation as either hope they can continue to believe in ... or hype they can belittle."

It's short-trigger thinking like this that has given us 3 coaches in six years. Butch has done a wonderful job in recruiting and has gotten the kids to buy into his system. He has instilled discipline and continues to develop the talent on the current roster. This year's team has played better than most of us have expected and light years better than their performances under the prior regime. Win or lose, this is not the pivotal game of Butch's career that some are making it out to be.

I agree to an extent that this is an important game, but it's not one of those "If we can't win, we won't go to a bowl" type of games.

The start is a little too much but most of what he writes is pretty close.

We had a few question the staff after OU. We had many more complaining after UGA. If UT loses to a beatable UF team at Neyland... Jones will probably lose some supporters for real. And no, it won't be a majority or even close. But what experience teaches and especially concerning this fanbase.... negative voices tend to take control of the conversation.

That was almost a direct or indirect slander of UT in every bit of that piece. It's kinda unfair to label this as a make or break game for Jones, because Florida obliterated the first team they played. Hung with Bama for a whole half until they Bama pulled away, and then didn't get up for a game against UK in the Swamp because they're still Kentucky.

Now a hyped up game in Neyland against the Vols in a make or break game for their coach... best believe they will be up for this one.

This game is more important than you seem to think. There are two main teams and then a couple of others that a UT coach MUST beat. The two they must compete with and beat with some frequency are UF and Bama. After that, you have UGA and USCe. So far, Jones is 1-4 vs those teams. Each additional time he loses to one of them.... his leash shortens 10 times what it does for any other loss.

That's a bit revisionist. Bama fumbled 3 times and missed a FG within the first 17 minutes of that game. If very easily could have been a 31-0 game by the 13 minute mark of the 2nd qtr.

UK called them out. One of their players predicted a win in the swamp... and well coached teams don't have those kinds of let downs. You're too used to what we've seen at UT over the past 15 years.

They may manage to pull all of the pieces together this weekend.... but to date UF has NOT looked like a good football team.

No reason we shouldn't win. If Jones wants a "new attitude" around the program, this is a must win.

I won't call this particular game a "must" win... but a win like this one in this season is pretty much a "must" to take the next step forward. Old demons have to be exorcised.

I will say this, liquor sales in the state of Tennessee will most likely break an all time daily record Saturday if we don't.

Huh? Please explain.

You think Dooley just needed more time? That things were improving?

You think Kiffin ran to USC because there was just too much pressure to win here?

You think Fulmer was actually going to turn things around after trending down for a decade?

I see alot of folks on here make statements like yours and they make no sense to me.

I want UT to win this game as badly as anyone but I don't see it as a season defining nor a career defining game for Butch and his staff. Would a win go a long way towards recruiting, goodwill from the fans, alumni, and board of trustees alike, a potential second place standing in the SEC east, and the ending of a nine year drought against Florida? Absolutely. I just don't feel that a loss this Saturday would "shorten the leash" or "heat the seat" any more than the losses to UGA or OU. On paper and with most pundits, Tennessee is supposed to lose this game. Even after the defeat to Georgia this Vol team is upbeat and ready for Saturday's task. I think that by the time Verne and Gary warm up their vocal chords for the 3:30 Ole Miss - Bama game we will be hearing a surprised "Oh my!" at the final score in Neyland.

Good deal, maybe we can get some of this cryin', whinin' and bellyachin' out of the way early. Besides if we win you fella's won't have anything to complain about for a couple of weeks.

The thought of putting another coach on the hot seat after a little more than one season is insane.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with the article. It is time to put up or shut in ten years the only thing people are going to remember is was it a W or an L.
