Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2023-24

Ya'll know I'm not a ref conspiracy theorist, but Troy just got royally, inexplicably hosed. x3. These calls directly cost them a chance to win the game. And were not close. It was at least a level of sustained incompetence that should never happen at this level.

Have refs always been this egregiously bad? Is it just me or has ref quality taken a nosedive lately?

It’s gotten worse. They need some sort of grading system. If the games you call suck you’re out. Seems like there is no oversight except for the women’s officials governing themselves.

It's really sad that SEC officiating doesn't look so bad after the "Great Troy Robbery"

I was actually very impressed with our officials. They called a fair game. Big part of why we won the way we did. When we are not penalized for being big alone we are able to actually play basketball. Lots of games this season the officials absolutely shut down our bigs.

Sure seems like no one is overseeing but could that be possible? The SEC and NCAA have ref watching offices, I'm sure. I assume those that grade out best are used for tourneys, right? So these refs should be the cream of the crop? Dear God!

if the crop is wacky weed

Guess what? Marist is up early on Louisville, leading by 6 with about a minute to go in the first quarter.

Marist still up 4 mid 2nd qtr.

Out of the 3 calls against Troy the only one I will give them is the tripping call. The charge call the A&M player was never set like at all. Then the over and back call how do you miss that???? Like how?? I honestly hope those 3 refs are done after today's game....that was bad like really bad

they'll probably be working at 5PM tomorrow

I believe you will hear tomorrow that it was not an over-and-back because in the referee's opinion the player never had full possession of the ball until she crossed the half court line. It's close... but on her first dribble the ball is over the half court line. If nothing else, it gives the ref that was standing less than five feet away what we used to call "plausible deniability," LOL.

In general, though, if we're trying to get equality between the men's tournament and the women's, the NCAA needs to look at the quality of the officiating as well as the weight rooms, food choices, and swag.

Here's the deal guys - told to me by a friend in Texas that's working his way up the college refereeing ranks.

Everyone starts out wanting to call men's games at the lower levels because they consider the quality of play of women's basketball at those levels bad. They work the games they can get and try to get into the referee camps of the guys who schedule the big conferences' games...(Which sounds like a conflict of interest to me).

Anyway, as the winnowing process begins and you get to a certain age, you are encouraged to go into the D1 women's ranks if you can't get scheduled by the the D1 men's guys. So essentially, you're getting 2nd tier referees in the women's D1 games. I have no idea where the female refs come into the mix at, but you don't see any in D1 men's games, even though there are a few in the NBA.
