They fired him to hire an NBA assistant, seems like they had their guy for a while
Surprising. He was the one who knocked off Purdue two years ago in the first round with 16-seed Fairleigh Dickinson, then took the Iona job when Pitino left for St. John’s. Very strange move.

I feel like alot of the pieces I’ve been reading have an outdated idea of what this team is capable of on offense. We’re not Alabama but we’re also not some putrid offense that can only win 55-50 slug fests. We won some shootouts this year against good teams, and have a fairly balanced offense with four guys averaging double digit points

We’re likely going to be double digit favorites in both first weekend games. We very well could be double digit favorites in our sweet 16 game. Can’t remember a time we’ve been handed this wide open of a deep run in March. Really hope we take advantage of this, especially with there being a strong possibility of mayhem in the top half of our bracket.
We're sure not going to be double digit favorites in the Sweet 16 if it's vs UK

We've really only had what I consider 2 bad offensive games, at UF and at AU. But at AU it was a defensive battle so we still had a great chance to win (probably should have). As much as we get bent out of shape the offensive droughts in games (myself included), objectively specaking I don't think our offense is problem.

Now I say that and watch us struggle to throw it in the ocean Thursday.

That’s the tough part of this tournament. All it takes is one bad shooting day (or a really hot one by your opponent) and you can be gone early. Doesn’t matter how good you’ve been all season. But it helps to be a good defensive team. Defense will at least keep you in the game when you are struggling offensively. Might not be pretty but you can still win.

Watching a nail biter in Dayton makes me even more thankful for Coach Barnes than I was already. The days of us hoping we could sneak into the tournament and end up in Dayton don’t seem like that long ago. Now, we’re a 5 seed at the bare minimum every season. Just an amazing stretch of basketball here under Rick’s leadership. Whenever Coach Barnes does hang it up, his name should go in the rafters very, very soon.

I know.
I think that what BYU did with their hire is getting attention of other schools who want to try to go that route and use NBA connections to recruit talent. Maybe it will work.

There’s a selling point to be had when you hire a guy with an NBA background (especially in BYU’s case when there is an enormous NIL commitment). TBH, Gregg Polinski having an NBA background I think has been huge for us. While it seemed like a fine hire at the time, it looks even better in hindsight given how hectic roster management is now.

Maybe i just haven't been paying attention in years past, but when did losing teams start playing in the NIT? Oklahoma St is 15 -17 before tonight

They struggled to get teams this year because so many teams either declined to go or they went to the new one Fox is doing, the College Basketball Crown. They also set up 2 autobids to the SEC and ACC, so SC and LSU would have gotten in but they both declined. And many ACC teams declined. The Big East, Big 10 and Big 12 all committed to 2 teams each in the CBC; which resulted in no Big 10 or Big East teams accepted NIT bids. Okie St. was the only B12 team that accepted.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea it had got that bad for the NIT.

Yeah, I'm not saying it's a bad move. Working for BYU thus far, so we shall see. Stackhouse had an NBA background as did Avery Johnson, Woodson, etc, so results are mixed. Penny has had his best year but I'm not sure he can sustain it.

I think this new wave is a younger generation that's a little more plugged into the interests of today's era/player, which is what you're saying. I tend to agree.

The newly formed Crown Basketball Tournament has 4 teams under .500.

DePaul
Butler
USC
Arizona St.

Enjoy...
I wonder how the teams invited to CBT rank in attracting fanbase eyeballs? I'd think viewership in the first years of a tournament would count more than headlines generated.
But what do I know?

68 teams in the NCAAT is too many. It ought to be more like 32 (or 24 or 20) and have the NIT and other post season tournaments have higher level participants. Instead they are all failing while the NCAAT has a monopoly. And the NCAAT is very flawed for determining one champion. Random officiating. Single elimination. Made for TV ratings story lines (Cinderellas). If the NCAAT field was around 24 teams maybe it could be setup with a winners and losers bracket and still wrap up before May.

It would also make conference tournaments relevant again. But the NCAA has no interest in supporting the conferences. It’s time for the Big 10 and SEC to leave the NCAA and take a handful of teams from the other conferences with them.

It's time for the major conferences to do away with the conference tournaments. Have a short playoff with qualifying teams with home court for the higher seeds. A prime time championship game on a nuetral court like football has. No regular season trophy. Imagine the Florida vs Tennessee for all the SEC marbles on Thurday night at 7:30 or any Kentucky matchup for the championship. It would be a tv ratings bananza.
