If Barnes were to retire…

you can think that, but the record of events and overall comments from those involved says otherwise.

Cal was so excited about the Arkansas job that not even his lifetime contract at Kentucky could keep him there… makes total sense. Quit huffing glue bro.
I mean, they weren’t firing him. But Cal was tired of the expectations and didn’t want to be fired eventually. He definitely was the one that jumped because the Tyson founder is someone he has a relationship with.

Apologies if already noted, but Barnes seemed to end speculation over imminent retirement in his presser yesterday when he said he’d like to schedule a home-and-home with UCLA going forward. That doesn’t sound like someone who’s on his way out the door.

I hope he stays a few more years. He is getting up there but I have really enjoyed having him as our coach.

If Barnes was to win it all, I could see him stepping away. Maybe even if he got this team to a final four. However, seems like Barnes loves what he does and as long as he has the energy and health, I suspect he may stick around for two or three more years.

Can we at least table this discussion until the tournament is over? Let's just enjoy what we have while we have it
So true! How many times back before Pearl did we even ever dream of having seasons like this. Back to back sweet 16 seasons, 25+ wins. We have a gem now. Enjoy it while we have it.

I love Barnes and how he has elevated our program to the top tier in SEC year in and year out, consistent winner, great culture, great kids. Super proud of him and this program. I hope he stays for several more years. It does feel like since transfer portal became a thing he's reinvigorated. But I could also see him wanting to go out with this group. And not want the deal with NIL and some of the drama. If he was pondering retiring considering the class he is, I'm sure DW is in the loop and prepared.

With that said, if he retires, and with DW track record and preferences. Some guys I could see and kinda like are...
- Bucky McMillan (basically Kim Caldwell clone from a system standpoint)
- Bobby Richey at Furman, good offensive guy, preaches culture and development
- Eric Henderson SDSU, potent offensive team

If we went proven guy I like TJ-O

Barnes is not going anywhere anytime soon. He is lining up roster with transfers to go along with his recruits.
The portal definitely allows him to extend his career as he doesn’t have to waste time developing guys. Pitino made this point in interview with Barstool. He is taking zero high school guys and solely relying on portal.

Welp, Beard got Ole Miss to the Sweet 16. Safe to say the rehab has worked well. As the old adage goes, Winning heals all things.

Seems like more of the hot MM names have been scooped up already this year than in any recent years, and the cycle ain’t done yet.

Ryan Odom: VCU > Virginia
Will Wade: McNeese > NC State
Niko Medved: Colorado State > Minnesota
Ben McCollum: Drake > Iowa
Jerrod Calhoun: Utah State > West Virginia (not official)
Bryan Hodgson: Arkansas State > UNLV (not official)

Would be a tough time to have to make a move if it plays out that way, and honestly even in the next year or two, these names were guys up and coming for serval years, not sure the MM pool will be this good for awhile.

So there are plenty of good coaches that have a resume that compete with Bruce's yet you can't name them?

And this notion that his issues at Tennessee are somehow still a factor is clownish.

Bill Self is still coaching at Kansas
Cal has coached almost 15 years after his issues at Memphis
Roy Williams faced no consequences at UNC
Bruce has been coaching in the SEC for 10 years now

But sure lets try to make something irrelevant that happened over 15 years ago and make it a hot pressing issue...

Once again I ask, name the coaches that are on Pearl's level. You can't
To add to your argument. People would be interested to know The AD that hired Pearl at Auburn was also on NCAA infraction committee that hammered Pearl. I always thought that was shady because the question was when his show cause ended could a school afford to take a chance on Pearl because if something happens they would get slammed by the NCAA. This AD hires Pearl so to me I feel like he helped squash us and sneak Pearl in the back door at Auburn.

In a situation where a successful coach is going to retire, for it to go smoothly at all you have to hope he gives the AD fair warning so discussions can start with candidates/can let candidates know the job is going to be available.

Would think Barnes cares enough about the program to not just pull the rug out at the last second and retire without any prior notice whenever the tournament run ends.
