It's not often you see a kid with 17 touchdowns in the state of Georgia receive All-State notoriety and go unnoticed. That's very much the case for Conyers, Georgia wide receiver Jordan Young. A impromptu visit to Knoxville last weekend left him feeling so good about Tennessee that he picked the Vols on Friday afternoon. "I felt at home there," Young said. "The coaching staff felt like they have been together before. They have a great chemistry and just with he players they have coming up, I feel like it's going to be a great thing and place."

Young spent the weekend as the undercard to bigger names like Quay Walker and J.J. Peterson, but all of that was lost on him. Tennessee treated him like he was the biggest name on campus and it made an impression on him. He loves the staff and believes they have the right mindset to win. "I feel like the program has a championship feel," Young said. "Coach Pruitt coming from Alabama, he knows a lot. Coach (David) Johnson coming from Memphis had a lot of great receivers. I think it's just a great fit there."

The Vols hired Johnson on Saturday and he arrived just in time to meet Young Sunday morning. It's the beginning of what both hope to be a strong bond. "He's a guy you can talk to and he is big on communication," Young said. "Having kids our age, him being a high school coach, he knows what we are coming from on our level. Our meeting last weekend was a good conversation and we have been in contact all week."

Young is the reigning state champion in the 110 hurdles in the Peach state and track is where he has made a name for himself. Now that will transition to football, but he believes that his lack of star power can be tracked to the fact that football has been more of an activity and less of an agenda. "I'm a track guy so I didn't really do camps," Young said. "My first two years of high school, I know nobody came to our high school because in layman's terms, it was garbage. We really didn't get any scouts. I'm on my fourth coach in three years there."

And the latest head coach at Heritage also put him in position to make this jump late in the process. "I'm a late bloomer," Young said. "My junior year wasn't productive at all. I just want to say it's a blessing to be happening in this short amount of time. I just listened to coach Johnson this year and I trusted his system and spent time in the weight room." Young continues to hear from programs like Auburn and Ohio State as National Signing Day approaches.

So what happened in January 2018 to suddenly make him a 4* recruit? Seems like that sort of thing would happen during a football season or after a few track meets, are something.

He got offered by a P5 school and the recruiting sites finally looked at his film

“my mind’s made up on tennessee,” said young, who’s ranked by 247sports as the no. 190 overall prospect and no. 27 wide receiver in the 2018 class. “tennessee, it was one of the first ones to reach out to me. The coaching staff was great. “once i went down there and saw the campus for myself, the players, the coaching staff, the facilities, i definitely fell in love with it. I definitely wanted to commit.”

“really, it was the coaches,” young said. “i’m a person that gets good vibes off first impressions, so when i met the coaches, i saw how down-to-earth they were, how friendly and how they actually care about family, and vfl — volunteer for life — the football life they have after, that really stuck to me. I loved that.

“my coach instilled into me, it’s either championship or fail, and i really think that’s how they feel about it (at tennessee). Even though this is supposedly a rebuilding era, i feel like for them it’s either go big or go home, so i love that.”

other teams still might try to steal young away from the vols leading up to national signing day. He hasn’t completely ruled out visiting other schools, but he said he has yet to schedule any additional trips. “as far as official visits, it depends on the school,” he said. "i told my coaches auburn. I told my coaches miami. That’s the only two i’m really feeling.”

young said florida state showed interest in him, but he doesn’t think the seminoles are “going to be a problem” for the vols.

“they basically wanted me to come down for an official visit, and i told them i planned on committing today to tennessee,” he said. “and they said, if anything goes wrong or if anything happens, to definitely let them know because they’d rather have somebody like me on their team than against them. They’re in need of a receiver.”
