’14 GA ATH Elliott Berry (UT Signee 2/5/14)

It may or may not happen

Again - I'm not sayin it would be fair to the berrys. Or even that it is or should happen. But fun to me to speculate.

But now I hope it does happen so that some of you people speaking in condescending absolutes can eat your words. And also because it would help UT.

But either way the Berrys will be Vols. GBO!

There's nothing in the NCAA rules preventing family members from funding college expenses....we had a couple of LB's recently doing this if you remember.

This, I had a friend that swam at Virginia Tech with a descendant of some sort of Dr. Scholls (can't remember the exact relationship), anyways since they had all this Dr. Scholls money his grandfather decided to pay for him to go to his alma mater and let the scholarship be used elsewhere. There is nothing wrong with this as long as the prospective athlete has a preexisting relationship with the individual that predates the the kid being a prospective student athlete and the student athlete never takes an official visit.

Is this what you suppose happens or do you have some data to support this statement?

I think it's a matter of class. If you're asking for a gift to the university there's nothing wrong with that. I think when you involve the twins it crosses a line into an area that is defined as bad taste or classless. So yeah it is what I think is suppose to happen. My parents were moderately wealthy so I was taught certain rules. They were solicited constantly for a wide assortment of organizations but there are lines that one does not cross because crossing those lines is a bad reflection on one's character and the character of the soliciting institution. It reveals a level of greed that is unacceptable.

The OV part would have to be football specific as Ron stated. I have a family member who was recruited in a minor sport and took all 5 of his official visits to D1 schools and was asked to walk on at 2 places and offered partials at the other 3.

It must be sport specific then, because I know for a fact that is swimming as well he was specifically advised not to OV if he was going to walkon

What did your folks teach you about calling someone names (ref post 1199) when you have a differeing opinion on a subject - not too classy there my friend.

I'm calling BS to your whole story. The likely hood of a similar situation arising with your parents in the past for them to educate you on is unrealistic.

I don't think so.

But neither have the Berry twins.

Just something to consider.

Should be fun speculation for some up until the point where they take their official. Or even better if they don't take an OV we can debate this until they sign in February. Bruin will be in heaven, something he can argue for months! :)

Maybe its not sport specific and in my personal case the rules were unknowingly violated by the coaches? The NCAA can confuse the best of folks!

IMO there is a 1% chance CBJ would try to pull something where he could have them walk on and sign 2 more kids. I fully expect them to sign a LOI and be on scholarship for the Vols next year.

Surely your folks taught you the same thing. It's called taking advantage of a family member.

I explained above. It would be seen as insulting and rightfully so. The only reason the idea is being brought up is because EB has some cash. Should we evaluate every recruits finances before offering scholarships?

I don't expect Butch would ask them to do it. I would imagine if it happened, it would be because the Berry's presented the idea. Doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility to me.

My folks taught me that intelligent folks don't have to lower themselves to name calling.

The situation we've been discussing is so unique and unlikely to occur, that I doubt any parent has ever discussed the matter with any child anywhere before.

If I am Eric Berry and this was even once mentioned to me, my brothers go to Auburn...JMO

Right. I don't understand why people don't get the distinction. If Eric was asked and it was legitimate to pay for Coleman Thomas he'd have no problem saying yes or no but his brothers? That's just not cool. It's personal then.

What if Eric was doing the mentioning?

I think Eric would give major cash donations to the University, but I dont think he would get involved with his brothers like this. Im big rich Eric Berry so exploit my brothers...seems tacky. Not name calling or saying this discussion is dumb, I just see no way this would ever be something discussed by CBJ and EB.

I personally wouldn't mind being asked to reallocate my million dollar donation toward my brotjers' tuition, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be highly inappropriate. No one should solicit that from EB, but it's fun to hope he offers.

Why would it be tacky to pay for your brother's college and help your alma mater get out of a slump at the same time? It would be a great story every time they stepped on the field. If I loved my alma mater and wanted to help them in anyway possible, seems like the best way to do it.
