This seems weird. Who told Cam Hayes that Springer committed to Tenneessee? Why not just make it public?
Just spitballing, and this involves a lot of assumption, but my guess is that once Hayes made the decision to definitely reclassify, he realized it greatly sped up his recruiting timeline. He then reached out to the schools he was most heavily involved with and gauged their true interest and availability.
The belief always was that while Hayes might make an early(ish) commitment, the decision to reclassify likely wouldn't come until the spring, when as we've seen, lots of movement happens on the transfer/NBA draft front. That would have worked out well for Tennessee as an additional spot(s) would likely open up and we may have room for him.
My guess is he is looking at OVs this fall and an early period signing in November. If Tennessee truly did receive a silent commitment from Springer recently, then they don't have an open spot, and if they wish to oversign by one, they probably would prefer it to be on a big man (PJ Hall, for example).
As to why it is a silent, Springer may still wish to visit Memphis this weekend to make certain of his decision given that it's clear that his top 3 were Tennessee, Memphis, and Michigan. He has already OV'd to TN and Michigan, and will OV to Tennessee again in October.
