‘20 NC SG Jaden Springer (UT commit 10/23/19)

I don’t see Fulkerson playing less than he did this year

Gets a little more crowded at the post in 2020-21. ORN, Plavsic, Pember, Walker. Plus Pons and Kent and a possible 4th in the 2020 class. I think Zach Kent is the wild card. If he ever gets significant minutes then that hurts Fulkerson. Fulkerson and Pons both need to be able to score away from the basket in order to significantly bump up their minutes. Fulkerson could play 30 minutes if he grad transferred to somewhere like ETSU.

Fulkerson could play a lot of minutes at UT if he starts knocking down perimeter shots consistently. He looked better with his free throws last year. I wonder if the dislocated elbow and wrist damage to his off hand affected his shot as a RS freshman and early last year.

I'm not sure why you cancel Hayes' visit if you aren't darn near certain that Springer is all but committed. There is nothing to lose by bringing in Hayes on a visit except losing the visit against the nunber you are allowed, which we won't likely approach anyway given that we have already landed our top targets. Doesn't seem like we will be casting a wide net and hoping. To me, the cancellation of that visit was the most compelling evidence of the Springer commitment rumors. Not crystal balls or rumors.

I agree it definitely meant something, I’m just saying that if Hayes comes in on an OV you’ve got to tread carefully with questions he may ask or if he starts asking if they’re ready for his commitment. I also think the staff probably felt like the right thing to do would be not to waste 1 of Hayes 5 OV’s when they knew they likely weren’t going to have room for him in the end.

John Martin says Memphis certainly has a shot. He says Penny doesn't bring anyone in if he thinks he can't land him. Not groundbreaking. Obviously, by making the visit, they do have a shot. But it's interesting to listen to their side of it when I know Springer's recruitment up until now.

Do you still think he’s a Vol lock @VolGee4

I wasn't trying to spread doubt on the Springer news. I agree that the 100% Crystal Ball rate and cancelled Hayes visits are compelling evidence.....but again without an official announcement nothing is for certain and Memphis pulled off a crazy successful recruiting class during Penny's first turn so it's hard not to suspect the Brinks Truck isn't involved somehow. No kid and their family is completely immune to the Bag-Man. So I am skeptical until an official announcement is made.

Is PJ Hall the highest ranked recruit left (outside of Springer) that we are in on? Essentially, is he the dream target to close out the cycle, or is it someone else?

Based on the current circumstances, I would be surprised if he went anywhere other than UT. But, it's recruiting. I also don't know anything special. But Springer's basketball relationships, the CB's, and the development with Hayes all seem to point to UT.

Maybe the staff has already been told by Springer that he’s coming?

That’s the only logical explanation because you just don’t turn down an elite talent like Hayes.

I would take that as a given. Now, could he change his mind? Of course, but they must not think it is likely.

John Martin also thinks Memphis/Penny will land anyone they want

Hall would seemingly be best case scenario

I was also counting the games they had lost as games they would’ve had to win, but I see what you’re saying. Regardless, assuming a team that struggled like they did would waltz to the F4, and then assuming the 2nd team would beat the national champions, that’s a whole lot of assuming...especially claiming it as a definitive back to back F4 teams.

As I said, I’m the biggest Barnes supporter and had we won those games I would say best case we are lucky to make 1 final four out of those 2 situations.
IF Loyola doesn’t hit a miracle we would have been favored in next 2 games no doubt. IF Purdue doesn’t have EVERYTHING go their way UT would’ve played Virginia who were obviously a tough team but one I think UT matches up very well with. So I think it’s probable they make one Final 4 and if we could get lucky 2 Final 4s. I don’t think this is even a stretch of the imagination. Of course this is all hypothetical. Almost every championship team has had a call/play go their way that made their season. Example: Patriots

I'll say this. Would be a bad look for Springer to tell players and coaches he's coming (rumored). Then opt to go to Memphis after the fact. It obviously happens in recruiting. But I'm also considering that he still has another AAU circuit to play under Bobby Maze Elite. Bobby probably wouldn't take kindly to him essentially screwing over Tennessee in favor of a rival. Just my opinion.

Why would Springer play another circuit of AAU?

I see all of that as a very encouraging sign because I don't think Barnes is compromising the type of player he is looking for just in the vein of "signing a 5-star" for appearances. He found highly ranked players that ALSO fit what he is looking for (blue collar, embrace hard work, love and breathe basketball, high character, etc) so he has backed off on some guys that maybe didn't fit everything he was looking for.

I’m not sure why you limit it to Hayes? We turned away Top 50 in Ruzhentsev. Opted not to push hard for Top 30’s Thompson or Hall? Didn’t pursue Top 100 Keon Ambrose? Quit recruiting Top 50 Matthew Murrell? Backed off Top 75 Jayden Stone?

Boy

Tells me he was ours if we wanted him. Will be interesting to follow and compare his career there and Baileys for us.

Definitely don’t think that’s what it means...I think we would’ve had a chance but if you go back NCST has been talked about as the likely leader for awhile.

You’re also making an assumption that Bailey cost us Hayes, there’s no proof that Hayes would be willing to come here with James and Springer, he very well may not have wanted to.

The key would have been how the staff approached the Pg position. It would have easier to sell Haynes that he was the pg and Springer was the sg imo

I don’t know how you could predict that any of those guys are going to outplay Fulkerson who has actually logged meaningful minutes and is going into his 4th year in the program.
