Saying the staff choose Cardwell over Hall shouldn’t be taken literal imo

It appears to me that Cardwell was a bird in hand kind of player and any preference the staff had over Hall wasn’t big enough to risk going 0/2.

It seems likely to me the staff liked Hall better but realized that missing out on Cardwell wasn’t worth the risk.
Makes sense

This is kind of how I believe it played out.

Having said that, I need to see Cardwell commit rather quickly for me to continue believing it's the case. If he drags this out a couple weeks into the early signing period, then I become less certain of that.

I’d assume he takes a week or so to let the Springer dust settle. Remember its taken long while after we canceled the PGs visit for Springer to announce

I know some of you guys really like Hall, but if you watch film on him you have to question if he can be physical enough to play center and score over length. Cardwell made more sense and likely has more NBA potential. At this time last year, everyone had Barrett over Williamson for first pick.

Yeah, but I think there have been some mitigating circumstances in that one (finishing his OVs and finding a time and place to hold his ceremony). Cardwell, if he is ready to commit as the cancellation of Hall's visit suggests, isn't the high profile recruit that would need a national tv announcement.

No but I also think that Barnes has enough respect to a player he has been recruiting to not make it look like we "passed" on him. Cancelling the visit, Cardwell immediately committing would come across as a slight to Hall. It's not necessary to appease our fan base's timeline to slight a kid like that. Let Hall move on and then let Cardwell commit.

If Cardwell held off this long to visit, and held off on committing, we are to think he wouldn’t hold off another 48 hours?

I don’t think they cancel the Hall visit without it being a sure thing. Gotta look at it like Cardwell was in and entertaining another recruit could nix that. Personally didn’t see the negative in going with either player. Different strengths from each that enhance the team but Barnes can tailor the team either style. An athletic defensive team is intriguing.

Hall has plenty of suitors. There’d be no slight perceived.

He was being looked at as a stretch 4...which the NBA covets in today’s game.

I know where you're heading, but that may be overthinking just a little. I don't think there would be any slight in taking Cardwell after Hall doesn't visit as previously scheduled. 99% of the world isn't going to know whose decision that was, anyway. JMO.

That’s assuming Hall had told the staff he’d decide yea or nah on the visit. I’d assume they knew he wasn’t willing to do that and Cardwell was getting pressure elsewhere and the time was now

NBA covets athleticism, versatility, 3 point shooting, and defense. Steve Novak, Ryan Anderson, and Kyle Wiltjer types are struggling to stay on teams right now.

Ok? Maybe I’m confused over some finer point. You’re asking why he didn’t commit last Saturday through yesterday over an official that was cancelled last night?
he could’ve committed and they cancelled the visit, no? If they wanted to cancel OV first then why didn’t they cancel it days ago?

Rumors were we were running 3rd for Hall, if you truly wanted him then nothing wrong with bringing him in and seeing what the vibe is. Maybe he commits, maybe he doesn’t, but what do you lose?

Cardwell took his other OV’s awhile back, he’s been sitting around seemingly waiting on UT, doesn’t really add up that those schools have sat back for months and then yesterday started hounding him for a decision.

Seems very reasonable to think that the slow play timeline speed up and the pressure on Hall ramped up.

“We are excited about you coming in and are going to need an answer on the visit”

When that response wasn’t acceptable then here we are

Those are journeymen. A healthy Cousins, Kevin Love, Nikola Jokić, Luka Dončić et al are roster foundations.

Sure it adds up. When dominos start to fall and spots get tighter schools start putting the pressure on to fill those spots

How long you make him wait for an uncertainty? “Just hold on and see if we get this better player...you good?” Sounds like a recruiting flub waiting to happen. Recruiting is a two way street. You have two comparative talents and one is ready and raring to jump on board...reward those types.

I know how this conversation goes with you, we won’t ever agree so I’ll just end it here...I don’t think that’s how it went, there’s no reason why you don’t shoot your best shot with Hall. He’s taken all his visits and so a decision wouldn’t be all that surprising shortly after his visit to Tennessee ended. My opinion is that Tennessee really likes Cardwell, thought his game was a good fit, brought him in on the OV and he meshed with the guys on the team, had Springer in his corner saying they wanna play together, and he’s essentially sat around hoping for the change to come here...at the end of the day I think those things were enough for Barnes and staff to say call up Hall and tell him we don’t have room, no need for him to visit.
