‘22 FL SF Dillon Mitchell

Not a banner year for recruiting, but there are many months till signing day! I wonder if we'll consider looking towards the 2023 class for people considering reclassification?
Pretty disappointing. You'd have hoped to parlay two 1st rd picks into a little more success on the recruiting trail. Also has to make us wonder whether Gainey and Clark have as much recruiting muscle between them as we were led to believe. Aidoo fell in our lap after the Marquette fallout, last year, and Tennessee would have had to really screw things up to not land BJ Edwards. The late addition of Zakai Ziegler aside...not sure what role either guy played there...those two haven't closed the deal on hardly anyone, which is disappointing given their reputation and previous relationships.

I am pretty much in agreement with what you said, but I'm trying to remain level-headed since in the past I have said "not a great year" and then things turned themselves around. However, it's definitely disappointing that we swung and missed on nearly all (except BJ) of our top targets. I don't know if the fact that only Fulky is technically gone after this year is deterring some from coming here. Maybe there is more to this situation than we know about. I guess we'll see how it unfolds in the next few months.

Well, it can still turn around and also still be a disappointment up to this point.

No real positive way to spin the fact that we struck out on Cason Wallace, Brandon Miller, Julian Phillips, Jalen Hood-Schifino, Dillon Mitchell, KyeRon Lindsay, Justyn Fernandez, and Ernest Udeh, among others. We had some sort of advantage in several of those recruitments and couldn’t land the plane with a single one of them.

The new NIL rule probably didn’t help either

Here's the thing, if the NIL rule isn't helping, then we're doing something gravely wrong. The University of Tennessee is a national brand. A rule like NIL should be a huge boon to Tennessee's ability to recruit talent. Outside of Kentucky, there shouldn't be a brand in the SEC that is more capable of promoting it's athletes in basketball than Tennessee.

Agreed.

The one thing I would say though, is maybe this just gives the less scrupulous more ways to work in the gray zone. That may be something that Barnes is less willing to do.

I mean Gainey did close the door on Aidoo, had to beat out UNC for him.

I’ll be curious to see how this class unfolds but also how it impacts strategy going forward…when you swim in Top 30 waters these are the things that can happen, and even more so in today’s landscape. Blue blood offers late, pro leagues come calling, NIL deals get offered…does the staff invest more time in those guys 40-100 and try to lock them up sooner rather than swinging at a bunch of Top 20 guys?

How many spots are we really looking at though? Ziegler took a spot away from this class, Jackson and Edwards will be solid multi-year players, and we still have the crazy transfer season ahead. Also another QDE or Aidoo could fall in our laps. It's disappointing, but we can easily recover.

Sounds like Mitchell to Texas is about to happen…

@TrippieRedd may wanna take a break lol

Talked to a few people this morning, and it sounds like Texas put themselves in a really good spot with Montverde (Fla.) Academy five-star small forward Dillon Mitchell during his official visit this past weekend.

I still need to check in with a couple of more sources before running with a Crystal Ball or anything, but the early returns are very positive.

Absolutely…with Chandler leaving we full with Edwards, Jackson would be 1 over. Obviously there’s always attrition and a guy could potentially leave for NBA, but it definitely looks like a smaller class.

If the very unlikely scenario occurs, we’re looking at zero spots. Fulky is the only senior and his scholly doesn’t even count. But, I’d say realistically 3-4 spots. BJ has one.

Glad we filled in w those guys and didn’t have a bunch of spots open in this class seeing how it’s now unfolded. And w the status of BHH and JJJ unclear after this year I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing still look to the portal for some help in the front court

I think it should be a mix. Important to have a foundation of multi year guys that the staff can develop. And still target some top guys especially in positions where immediate playing time presents itself. Then fill in with the portal
