‘23 ME PF JP Estrella (Tennessee commit)

Estrella has grown almost eight inches in the last couple of years. Over the Summer, he just started to regain some of the movement and control he lost as he grew. He’s a solid shot blocker, He has a reasonable hook and back to basket game, He covers a lot of ground rebounding out of zone, but his in zone rebounding is going to be a work in progress as he gets stronger. His instincts for finding open space to catch and shoot are very good, and he’s going to hit threes and twos outside. I’m excited about his potential, but I disagree with those who see him as a one and done. He needs to develop his ball handling, inside moves and strength. I can see him playing 2-3 years here. I think his minutes are going to depend on personnel, obviously.

Even with Aidoo here Estrella is more than capable of playing as a big 4 imo, much like we’ve seen Nkahmoua do quite a bit. I think Estrella will very likely average more than 17mpg his freshman his unless something changes with the roster, which obviously could happen. But if it’s just Estrella, Aidoo and Awaka I would think it’s a certainty that Estrella is over 17mpg, probably even if Uros returns as well.
Nkamhoua could stick around, as well, which would complicate things. And Julian Phillips may not be a one-and-done (less likely). A lot to still be determined, but I agree, if the only competition at two positions is Aidoo and Awaka, then Estrella will average more than 17 by default. I just doubt we only have those two guys to compete for minutes.

JP and Aidoo on the floor at the same time could definitely work offensively but I would worry about that lineup defensively.

I don’t know enough about Estrella to know how he will do defensively in college, but I love what Aidoo did defensively in limited playing time.
I am not saying either of them are bad defenders. I am saying they are both paint defenders. One of them spending a good part of a possession defending the perimeter is not ideal. And if they are in together one of them will have to do that.

Unless of course the opposing team is playing 2 post players?

Well yes, that would certainly be different. And in that situation I really like two defensive bigs having to account for both Aidoo and JP being capable perimeter shooters. That would present a very tough cover for an opposing defense playing 2 bigs.

What do you think coach thinks about their defensive capabilities? Those always seem really important to guys he targets.

It was not a blanket remark about them being poor defenders. I was simply that both of them are much better paint defenders. Both could struggle to move laterally if they were guarding a perimeter threat. I was saying that if both of them are in together that could be a problem depending on the lineup of the opponent.

Do you think this staff shares your opinion and would not plan to play them together?

Kind of figure Coach can handle the situational issues.

The Iowa 247 mow who CB’d Estrella to Iowa a few weeks back…
“Hi all,

David Eickholt from the Iowa site. Just thought I'd pop in quick. I have flipped my CB from Iowa to Tennessee to land JP Estrella.

I was told after the Iowa OV and prior to the Syracuse OV that the Hawkeyes were in the best spot. But again-- things change when prospects take a step back and truly evaluate their recruiting process. I've always been consistently told it was down to the Volunteers and the Hawkeyes. I've tried to maintain a clear message that it was a coin-flip between the two.

After talking to multiple people over the past 24 hours-- there's a consistent message. Tennessee is in the best spot.

Stay well and enjoy football season.”

Not to beat a dead horse, but Iowa never led.
Oh I agree, but he’s the one that kinda led the whole belief many seemed to have a few weeks ago, I think it may have been you that posted when he made his pick. At least he seemed to acknowledge Tennessee was right there the whole time, many folks seemed to suggest it was Iowa/Syracuse battle which was most definitely not the case.

That’s what I meant about beating a dead horse. I said he was wrong then. He’s trying to invent a world where Iowa led and then Tennessee crept back in. That didn’t happen. He made the trip to Syracuse to honor his relationship with Bonheim, but we’ve led for a long time.
